Burnes and Petricka optioned to AAA; Hart recalled; Wilson reinstated

And That

Recommended Posts

Would have much rather seen Burnes get a chance in the bullpen. Could be wrong, but I see him as a better option than Hart as a potential difference maker. I know all the "working on his secondary pitches" and "need to keep him stretched out if they need a starter later" approaches, but the Brewers could use bullpen help now and Burnes had plus-plus-plus results in that role last year. Putting him in the bullpen now does nothing to impact what his role would be for the Brewers past the next few weeks.

Lotta BS from Counsell from first week of season of "letting these young guys pitch", "it's their time"..... I'm not saying he's wrong in doing it, but he's pulling the trigger quite early with Burnes after hearing him speak on the topic in the opposite direction for weeks.

To be fair to Counsell, not sure he expected Burnes to be THAT bad.

Yet, he was bragging all three up in ST. They were the story of ST, according to CC.

What does that have to do with Burnes (and to some extent Peralta and Woodruff) struggling?

So what is the rotation now?

Chacin

Guerra (?)

Woodruff

Wilkerson

Davies

Guerra hasn't pitched since the 15th. Seems like he would be in line to take the open spot.

Anderson

Houser/Wilkerson

Woodruff

Davies

Chacon

Houser tomorrow, Anderson for Burnes, Wilkerson to pen.

Surprised that Houser wasn't brought up. Instead they got Hart who is another Claudio type lefty. Last year he stunk against both LH and RH hitter (over .300 BAs and over .415 OBPs) Righties smoke him throughout his career (.313/.362). I can't see the Crew carring two LOOGYs for very long.

I think this is the right move. You can’t have a young guy lose all his confidence this early in his career. Everything was getting hit hard and he needs to develop trust in his other offerings. Putting him in the bullpen would not help him work on his off speed pitches. The long term plan is for Burnes to be in the rotation, so they chose the route that will put him in a position to continue developing his pitches and hopefully help him regain some confidence by dominating some minor league hitters.

Honestly I have no idea why anyone believes what a manager says about a player coming into a season. Their need to manage players overrides their duty to tell fans exactly how they really think by a large margin. I think most fans know there is some amount of gamesmanship with the press going on.

They won their jobs in spring and Counsell had reason to praise them for what they did to that point. Both for what they did to that point and for their mental preparedness going into the season. He was also very clear all along that the opening day roster was not what the roster would look like for the whole year so it isn't like he said they were etched in stone for the remainder of the season. I get it's early to pull the plug now but Burnes has been really bad. As in nearly history making bad giving up homeruns. I think what finally made them pull the plug for now is he was getting worse. I think they're worried about doing lasting damage to his confidence by letting him get his hat handed to him time after time so early in his career. This is the first time he's struggled at any level IIRC so this is also part of learning how to be a big league player. He'll need to figure out how to overcome adversity at some point anyway. Which is some way makes this not so bad at this point in his career. It certainly doesn't change my view of him going forward even if I had hoped he'd be ready right away. Give him some time to clear his head and get his location issues straightened out and I think he'll be fine.

There needs to be a King Thames version of the bible.

I'm believe Hart will be sent back down ahead of Saturday, with Houser coming up to make the start.

Exactly and if the rest of the rotation had been stellar, they might have been able to be more patient, but they simply couldn't. He desperately needs to get his confidence back or figure out if he's tipping pitches because he's been getting hit hard and his head is spinning.

Too quick a hook.

As soon as he starts locating his fastball, he’ll be back.

Yeah that’s all fine and I’m sure he will work his way back. I just done like jacking younger guys around. It was the big fear I had when we went this route.

"This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.

I don't think he's being jacked around. He's being sent down to work on location, because whatever he's currently doing is absolutely not working. He obviously knows it better than anyone.

It's one thing for a young pitcher to struggle, it's another for him to get absolutely crushed. I don't like sending him down, but there really isn't a choice here.

A team "all in" doesn't get to let young players play through really poor play when there are many options available. Good decision. Also good to not move him to the pen if the intention is still to have him start this year.

Tom

@Haudricourt

Counsell said the start Saturday vs. Dodgers will be handled internally, with Chase Anderson the centerpiece. As for Monday in St. Louis, that's TBD at present.

Sounds like he will/should start. Would guess Wilkerson for Monday, but it could always end up being Houser.

Surprised it’s not houser on sat, but I guess they want to get chase stretched ASAP. Don’t think they going with full bullpen game on sat, think Wilkerson pitch 2-3 innings. My guess houser on Monday.

Not at all. It sounds like the Brewers have had conversations with Burnes and all agree his LONG future is as a starter. He cannot really work on things in the majors, so the result is 2-5 games in the minors is the goal (they said 2-3). Sometimes a pro golfer needs to take a weekend off and just work on the game. That's basically what they're doing here. It's not like their angry and punishing him by yanking him from the rotation. They're giving him the best chance for success. They're not REPLACING him in the rotation, they'll be FILLING IN for him. Very careful word choice

This is no different than the Phillies sending Pivetta down who has a much longer track record of success. When a guy is this terrible you can't just keep sending him out there. This makes complete sense.

He faced the Cards twice, Cubs and Reds.... probably top 10 offenses once everything plays out. Burnes is a top pitcher for us and needs tweaking, not a bunch of moves back and forth between AAA and majors.
