Tyrone Taylor

Jopal78

Just looked up the stats at AAA for Tyrone Taylor and he's off to a great start at AAA with .292/.346/.583. Overall in 131 games in AAA he's hit .279/.323/.512. It sure would redeem one of the poorest drafts in Brewer history where they had 4 picks in the top 100 and whiffed on their first two (Clint Coulter and Victor Roache), while they apparently hit the jackpot on Mitch Haniger he was traded away (in essence) for Zach Davies and 146 games from Gerardo Parra.

This is Taylor's 7th year with the Brewers, I don't know what the rules are for minor league players but if he doesn't earn his shot this year, (or is traded off) I assume he'll be looking for a new organization in 2020.

Taylor was added to the 40-man roster during the offseason, so he is Brewer property for the foreseeable future.

I hated that trade when it happened and even called in and argued with Bill Michaels(the big unit) about it who touted it as a massive defensive upgrade over Logan Schafer(he was not in any way an upgrade). But moreover, I followed prospects more closely then and was a fan of Haniger. I didn't think much of Banda in particular and I certainly didn't expect Haniger to become a stud, I just thought it was a pointless trade.

It looks so much worse in hindsight. Imagine our OF right now with Haniger in RF and Banda in our farm system. No Davies, but we could all live with that.

That said, bad trades happen. Just ask the Marlins.

Edit-For the record, I was a huge Clint Coulter fan and went to quite a few Appleton games just to watch him play....so not pretending to be some clairvoyant.

Except for his injury riddled 2018, Davies has been a reliable middle of the rotation starter (and the ace so far in 2019). plus do you really think they'd have traded for Yelich if Haniger was here? Pointless? The Brewers were in 1st place when they traded away Haniger. They needed to upgrade the offense. Unfortunately, their core players all slumped down the stretch that year.

Imagine this year's rotation without Davies. Zach has actually been very valuable to the Brewers since coming over from Baltimore. Plus, if Haniger somehow stuck with the Brewers and became an everyday player, the odds of having both Yelich and Cain (both much better outfielders) both on this roster are essentially zero. As for Banda - isn't he recovering from TJ surgery all year in his age 25 season? I guess he's got being lefthanded going for him. Plus, Banda likely wouldn't have stayed in our farm system without being eligible for the rule 5 draft before he would have needed to be added to a crowded 40 man roster.

Sometimes trades ultimately benefit both sides, which I think is the better take on what the Brewers were able to return in value for dealing Haniger and Banda by flipping Parra - I think the team that got completely jobbed in the whole process is the Dbacks, who also shipped out these same players a bit later in their development when they were actually considered to be borderline MLB regulars.

Yes, pointless. Adding a 4th OF'er that season for a very good prospect was a pointless trade.

I have nothing against Davies, but he's if he was available for half a season of Parra, I'm sure we could have acquired him for someone else.

Also, trying to play out how things would have happened is a fools errand. There's no reason the Brewers would have passed on the chance to trade for Yelich or sign Cain because they had Haniger. Yelich's natural position is left. Cain's is CF. Haniger is RF.

I don't see how this trade ultimately benefited us all that much. We did get a serviceable starting pitcher, but Banda turned into a really good looking left handed starting pitching prospect...not that I'll pretend I expected that, but Haniger has put up over 9 WAR the previous two seasons. An OF of Yelich/Cain/Haniger would be extremely dangerous. And maybe then when we were close to moving Braun to the Dodgers, we'd have pulled the trigger.

Maybe we trade Haniger to the Dodgers for Walker Buehler. Nobody has any idea what happens after the trade, but none of that changes that it was a bad trade when it happened. Trading Turang for a corner OF who with a .700 OPS wouldn't make sense just because we made some really good trades in the future, would it?
