2019-04-17: Cardinals (Wacha) at Brewers (Burnes) [Brewers lose, 6-3 -- Burnes’ struggles continue]

Eye Black
I am not really sure what the best option is here. The arms will eventually have to be in the rotation but both Burnes and Peralta look like they are boom or (mostly) bust right now. Problem is who do you start in their place given Guerra and Anderson aren't stretched out? I am beginning to wonder if the issue isn't Chris Hook. He really doesn't seem to have much of an answer to assist these guys.

Is the current Chris Hook different than the Chris Hook that worked with these guys for years in the minors, where they saw large degrees of success? Hook isn't the reason Burnes and Peralta are missing their spots.

Maybe the quality of hitters is better in the majors...

Trouble is having to make adjustments against major league hitters is a completely different set of circumstances than assisting in their development in the minors.

I'm not saying Hook is the problem, it's too early to tell, but you can be good at developing a young prospect pitcher and still not necessarily be a good MLB pitching coach. We'll see. His career as a MLB pitching coach is not off to a good start at all, obviously.

I don't know, but Derek Johnson sure seems like he is doing well in Cincy - and they never have good pitching.

Wieters is the type of hitter 2018 Burnes would have attacked. Instead, this version of Burnes nibbled around the edges before giving Wieters a meatball right down the middle that was scorched. Thankfully Aguilar caught it, or it would have taken his head off. Burnes is in his own head right now. He's trying to be too perfect.

I’d say one or two more starts for Burnes. Can’t just let him drown out there every five days. I really didn’t see him struggling anywhere near this level

I expected sporadic starts like this. He's been consistently bad so far, though. The sample is still very small, but there is no doubt reason for concern.

Feel like of all the young pitchers Burnes has the highest upside, can't give up on him yet. He's also faced 3 of the best offenses in the NL so far this year. Give him another few starts and see what he does. Not like we have a better option in AAA until Jimmy is ready anyways.

This is the major leagues. Production matters. Developing is done in the minors or if you are a rebuilding program fine. Brewers cannot afford to watch this any longer in my view. You have to give Houser a shot. Zach Brown? I'm even up for Chase at this point. You can't have an 11 era in your rotation.

That has to be the end for Burnes in the rotation for awhile. He is progressively getting hit harder and harder in each subsequent start, and there's no point in running him out there on a contending club to hand the team an automatic loss and burn up the pen.

The question is do they option him to AAA or move him to the pen

Well, Wilkerson coming in likely means there is no way he is going to start Saturday. I imagine that means we'll see Adrian Houser make the first start of his MLB career, with the off chance that Chase Anderson makes a spot start. With Anderson going 1 1/3 innings yesterday, though, that may be unlikely.

Here's the hard part: Peralta is hurt. Nelson is hurt. Suter is hurt. There are some options in the minors, but are they better than Burnes? It's probably worth a shot to see, but it's not like there are easy answers, especially since Chase may have to take Freddy's spot.

If Nelson comes back, that helps a lot, but I don't want Wilkerson getting the ball every 5th day either.

Chase Anderson should be making a return to the rotation after another start or two by Burnes. Or Nelson if ready.

There is struggling and then there is practically assuring your team a loss. I was amazed to see we were lucky enough to win two of Burnes starts so far. We can't afford to trot out someone with a 10+ ERA. That is beyond sucking...it is pathetic.
