2019-04-03: Brewers (Peralta) at Reds (Castillo) [Brewers win, 1-0 -- Peralta pitches a gem ~ 8.0 IP, 2 H, 0 BB, 11 K]

Eye Black
Stick with Pina catching Peralta, they seem to mesh well together

Pina did catch 68.2 of Peralta's 78.1 innings last year, when the team clearly seemed to be using some sort of catcher/pitcher buddy system once Kratz got here.

Will be interesting to see if they continue to be paired up this season now that Grandal is here.

Also nice to see Freddy ramp it up to 96 today after sitting at 92 last week. He looked like a completely different pitcher, as I suppose young pitchers often do.

He averaged 93 last game. I have no idea where you think his lack of velocity is coming from.

It came from talk of him hitting 97 in spring training, then sitting in the low 90s in his first start. Looking at the pitch chart, it does say he maxed out at 96 against the Cardinals though. I confess that I only listened to the first part of the game last week, and Uecker remarked that Peralta's velocity wasn't where he'd seen it in Spring Training.

What a game! I have a feeling we will get this clunker and a gem from Peralta often.

I think that may be the case as well. I know somebody else mentioned Peralta having the lowest floor and ceiling, however in my opinion he has the lowest floor but the highest ceiling so there could be some peaks and valleys.

Peralta certainly seems to have the widest range of potential outcomes at this point. I could see an argument for Burnes having a higher ceiling as a starter, but Woodruff is the closest to being at the "what you see is what you get" stage of his career development.

Not just “at Night” anymore.

Last years deep playoff run and abundance of close victories gonna pay off big time this year. This team has the mental toughness that few teams have. Counsell keeps talking about this in reference to the young guns. Regular season games nothing compared to the big stage of last year’s playoff games. This is a team whose collective heart rate has to be amongst the lowest in all of baseball.

Not going to lie for the games we have played I have been pretty calm through them all. Typically I would have had 3 heart attack scares and at least a stroke.

Here are the details of his outing: Freddy Peralta's PITCHf/x for April 3, 2019

Looks like he threw 5 pitches that exceeded 96-mph, and 1 that hit 97-mph. He had 90 total pitches that registered as fastballs (average velocity of 93-mph), but I am skeptical they correctly identified between his fastball and change-up. Either way, he was changing up his pitch speeds continually from between 89-mph to 96-mph.

Yeah, just wait until the first 2-game skid. The sky is never held up by much around here.

True...I would probably have the sky start falling if the starters start stinking up the joint. I think I could be positive through bullpen struggles though. That is a easier fix midseason. If the starters shart the bed we are in bigger trouble.

At least they have other viable starting options available should the current guys falter. It sure is great having guys like Anderson and Nelson in reserve, and younger guys like Brown and Houser around.

Kinda...The only guy we probably need to stick with through thick and thin is Chacin. Everybody else has options in case they implode for a few starts. Anderson, Nelson, and Guerra have had success in the past.

Although I just now see that we no longer have Josh Tomlin--so we don't quite have the depth I thought we had.

Obviously hope I'm wrong on this, but I have doubts Freddy Peralta is going to make it through May as a part of this rotation.

What a totally stupid post you made(though I had the very same doubts and was wondering if Peralta may be the odd man out if/when Nelson comes back).

Peralta to the minors? Pfft….

Seriously, I want you to post this about Woodruff and Burnes the next two days and lets just see how it goes. If Spahn and Sain the next two days, this should become a ritual.

True....I'd feel a lot better if we had a couple ace relievers to help prop that sky up though.

Honestly, I expected this to be a bad month for us. I thought .500 would be great. Get through the first month healthy and at .500 and given the awful news we got to start the year, we'd be in good shape.

I always thought chemistry in baseball was kinda stupid. I mean, it's helpful to a point, you feel the support of the guys around you, but Baseball is an individual sport...it's not like football or basketball.

This team is starting to make me question that. They're just so resilient and I didn't think the 1 run victories were a fluke with Hader and a guy with an ERA around 1.2, plus several other really solid BP guys, but who would have thought we'd be on the RIGHT side of all these one run wins this year?

Maybe it's our manager. Pushing the right buttons so consistently. I don't know if we finish 1st or 4th in the NLC, but this team is fun to watch.

Couple of things. Only one pitch was labeled a Change-up. It was 90 mph, so that's not a change-up. One pitch labeled a slider, should be in curve column.

So, what we have is two different fastballs (91) and curve (16)

This is really what I wanted to comment on though:

Velocities are assumed from 55ft (rather than the gameday standard of 50ft) for increased realism.

We need to keep this in mind, velo comes from various sources and methods so a "94 mph fb" for example is going to be captured differently.

It seems odd that Peralta would have 2 different fastballs with near identical spin rates and trajectories--but it also seems odd that he would have 1 fastball that varies by 7 MPH throughout the game.

Agree^^

Counsell worth several wins

Team Chemistry and resiliency several more

Front office some more

That’s why Vegas fangraphs prospectus and others constantly under project win totals for this team.

Great win, especially nice when you can score one and win.

A few thoughts....

*** I am all for skipping young Burnes or Peralta in the rotation when we have an off day. This would be Burnes turn. I do not want throwing too many innings with young arms to be an issue in September. Perhaps spot starts by Anderson or a minor leaguer might limit innings, as well. I feel somewhat similarly with Woodruff, as well.

*** I was wondering why CC set up the rotation like he did. I get why he started with Chacin. Did he want Freddy to face the Reds or was it more not to face the Cubs? Perhaps he wanted Davies to face the Cubs. Or was it all about the first series with the Cardinals? I don't know. Interesting to think about, though.

*** Hader should be good to go all games against the club if only throwing out be inning, or are we going to play this more conservatively and limitbhim to two?

Couldn't tune in at work at all, but glad Peralta did great. I've always said he reminds me of K-Rod after his peak. That's not to say he should be a reliever; it's just to say that there can be some extended unhittable stretches mixed in with waiver-worthy stretches. K-Rod tended to alternate great seasons with terrible ones after his prime, but I think inconsistency can affect reliever stats differently than starter stats.

I think one thing they have in common is just so much movement and unpredictability on their pitches that it can hurt them as much as it helps. K-Rod didn't always seem to be able to throw strikes when he needed to, but so many of his pitches looked like strikes before they moved that he still got tons of K's. I see a similar dynamic with Freddy.

ETA: I know K-Rod had more plus pitches. That's not the crux of the comparison though.

It's not just having talent, it's making the talent work. Scouts and sabremetrics only reveal so much.

Brent Suter was someone few here thought could emerge as a starter, but he did and was solid until he needed Tommy John surgery. Jed Bradley, OTOH, was seen as a rock in the rotation, and now is laboring to come back in the Atlantic League.

How many people thought Troy Stokes would emerge to be the type of hitter he has become? Few. At the same time, Victor Roache was a bust.

How you use a player matters, too.
