2019 Standings and Playoff Races Discussion

Eye Black
In weird possibilities news...

The Cubs and Cards may well not play tomorrow. Forecast is bad. It would kind of awesome if we finished .5 games up on Stl for the division, and they had to fly to Wrigley on Monday to play the makeup game. Then you probably couldn't have the WC on Tuesday. Would be crazy scheduling havoc.

They would probably play that WC on Tuesday. Very unlikely they move the date.

Brewers Magic Playoff Number is 5

Can't have a wildcard game on that date if there is a game 163 on that date involving a wildcard team.

They would probably force you to do a double header. That Monday is set aside for Game 163 games. They want everything done before that day. It really isn’t an open day to play.

I really doubt they would move it so a team can make up a regular season rain out, that is what I am saying. They need to be done incase of a Game 163 on Monday.

I don't see what they can do. Either the cubs play a double header game in stl in the final weekend where they are the home team for 1 of them or it would have to be pushed back. You can't do a double header on Monday because the make up would be in Chicago and potential 163 in stl. On Tuesday you could theoretically do a double header if stl wins the makeup forcing the 163 and then they lose but are the wc1, but that would be cruel.
Remember what Yoda said:

"Cubs lead to Cardinals. Cardinals lead to dislike. Dislike leads to hate. Hate leads to constipation."

We will see what happens tomorrow. Maybe the rain holds off. But there are no mutual off days remaining for the Cubs and Cards. If it is a washout, and if it ends up mattering, I don't know when that game could be played other than the 30th. And it would have to be played in Chicago.

I cannot see a double header if it would mean, for example, STL going from Chicago to STL and then, say, MIL or STL, having to go to WAS for a WC.

Admittedly, far-fetched...

Well I imagine tomorrow is an early game. MLB might make them sit around all day to play it. Is the rain really that dismal all day?

On another note we are basically on the brink of consecutive postseason appearances. Something that has happened just once in our existence. Something you would have to be close to about 50 years old to even remember as a fan.

Additionally we are slated to finish #8 in all of baseball for attendance. This would mark the most impressive ranking outside of 2011s #7 spot.

If the Cubs and Cardinals can’t get their game in tomorrow my guess is that they would tentatively schedule a doubleheader for a day in St.Louis with the Cubs being the home team in one of the games. If the Cardinals have the division wrapped up and the Cubs are out of the wild card race they wouldn’t bother with that game.
Note: If I raise something as a POSSIBILITY that does not mean that I EXPECT it to happen.

According to MLB, they will make every effort to get it in today because it’s the Cubs final home game. Otherwise, since there are no mutual off days they would play the game September 30th.

I would think MLB needs to keep the 30th open for potential game 163 and they play the potentially rained out game in St. Louis as part of doubleheader.

The Brewers magic number is now 3 with 6 to play. They are in position to HOST the WC game.

Washington has played two fewer games and has one less loss, so until Washington gets to the same number of losses it's not entirely in the Brewers hands. Still, gotta love where we are at considering everything that went against us this season!

A Nationals/Brewers NL Wild Card game is looking almost inevitable, isn't it? Just a matter of where.

I hope they dont hang another wild card flag out there if we go one and done.

:laughing I was thinking the same the other day. Celebrating making the playoffs is cool, but hanging a banner for a 1 game playoff that you didn't win feels pretty tacky. It sounds moderately better if you at least win the game and lose the NLDS.

Agree. They should have to win the one-game for a banner to be hung.

"This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.

In simple terms for the Cubs to tie us if we go 2-4 they need to go 6-0...I suppose we could go 1-5 and then go 5-1.

A team likely would have to go undefeated and hope we only win two games. I could see us going 2-4, but not one win or zero. It is not impossible.

Regarding the banner...to be fair in 2008 that got you into the postseason just like a division winner. The current WC set up is a lot different. Not sure a “Wild Card Champs” banner is worthy. They do celebrate it like a division/postseason series win with champagne so anything is possible.

We need to keep pushing and make that a home game. We played them much better at our place this year, which is true of many of our opponents I suppose.
