2019-03-28 (Opening Day): Cardinals (Mikolas) at Brewers (Chacín) [Brewers win, 5-4 -- Cain makes game saving catch; Déjà vu of 2018]

Eye Black
We have such a good lineup on paper. Man, I would hate pitching to that lineup. So exciting seeing it officially put together in a real game.

Is it me or does that Cardinal lineup not look all that imposing?

but it's not like every guy suddenly forgot every piece of advice he gave

Going back to Yo's final opening day start in 2014, we now have our 6th straight opening day with a different starter. Franchise record is 7 seasons, but don't read this list if you are eating lunch:

1996 Ricky Bones

1997 Ben McDonald

1998 Cal Eldred

1999 Rafael Roque

2000 Steve Woodard

2001 Jamey Wright

2002 Ben Sheets

Obviously I am not getting any work done right now. Looking through our opening days, in 1979 Mike Caldwell threw a CG with 0 strikeouts and 0 walks. Talk about pace of play, total game time was 2:02. The only other live ball ball era team with no K or BB on opening day was the 1935 Yankees.

Our only 2 HR opening day performance was Sixto Lezcano in 1980

Most hits = 4: Carlos Gomez 2010, Chuckie Carr '96 (including his only career Brewer HR), Jose Valentine '96, Dave Nilsson '94)

Most RBI = 6: Lezcano 1980

Most runs = 4: Jose Valentine 1996, Charlie Moore 1982

Obligatory "How will Chris Carpenter explain this to his kids?" post
"Dustin Pedroia doesn't have the strength or bat speed to hit major-league pitching consistently, and he has no power......He probably has a future as a backup infielder if he can stop rolling over to third base and shortstop." Keith Law, 2006

Ha ha! Mikolas couldn't strike out the side.
