rhp josh fields minor league deal; non-roster invite

djoctagone

fields' first opt-out date is tuesday. the club certainly has been giving him opportunities to prove his worth--he's tied for the club lead with eight appearances.

however, his 8.22 era with san antonio and a full 40-man roster (along with other relievers on minor league deals performing better than him) are not helping his chances of having his contract selected.

Yes, that is the far more interesting tidbit, Perdomo is now in AAA.

Let's hope he is the real deal. CC needs a closer now! Getting worried big time about Hader. He's now allowed 4 HRs in his last 5 appearances. Brewer pitchers as a whole allow far too many HRs, but you cannot have your closer and best pen arm getting lit up like that.

Perdomo is not a closer candidate right now, he’s been pitching multi-innings in AA. We’ll see if that changes now that he’s been promoted, but I doubt it. A lefthander that can get righty’s out and pitch multiple innings will be quite the weapon, just what we need to beat the dodgers.

Personally I couldn't be less worried about Hader. For someone with his kind of stuff, HRs are mostly just noise. Occasionally hitters will square up to his offerings, and sometimes that results in HRs. He's given up 7 hits, and 4 of them have been HRs. That kind of ratio won't continue. I think though that in part it's a matter of efficiency, he has the kind of stuff that he can just pound the strike zone and still get whiffs, which helps him go multiple innings without running up the pitch count. But living inside the zone means a bigger risk of hitters making good contact. I'm sure he could focus more on living around the edges, cutting out the HRs but at the tradeoff of higher pitch counts and a few more walks.
