rhp josh fields minor league deal; non-roster invite

josh fields has signed a minor league deal with the brewers and will spend finish spring training in big league camp. he is ticketed for san antonio.

There we go, this guy’s stats better than half our pen arms now. Feel 5% better about our pen already.

I like the pickup, but I think you're letting some small sample observations really sway your opinion on some of the bullpen arms.

2017-18 Stats as a Reliever (note, I normally prefer 3 year splits, but I didn't want Fields' less than stellar '16 to pull his stats down too far):

it appears that fields has one minor league option remaining.

Great pickup. I can't believe the Dodgers let him go after his stats with them the last 3 seasons. Stearns, you da man.

Thanks for last 2 years stats Mr Allen, better than Petricka Albers Barnes.

Fields actually looks like a terrific pick-up at this point of the spring. I know his numbers are a little hollow, but I'm still surprised the Dodgers gave up on this guy. It looks like he could possibly be a cog in the pen at some point.

Yes, Great pick-up. Stearns said AAA to start, won’t be there long IMHO, any one of Petricka Barnes stumble........maybe even Albers, but I doubt it.

Petricka has looked pretty good as well. Power arm and closer experience, although last couple years have been rougher. Still averaging roughly 1 K per inning, which is decent. I think he probably makes the team. Barnes can still be optioned, which is a good thing given his inconsistency.

Does anyone Know what happened to Barnes 4 seam 99 mph FB that he thru in 2017? Now FB I think is a cutter at 93-96? Cutter and slider getting hit much more. Why did he change?

Prior pitching coaches were enamored with the cutter and had him change his slider to a cutter. It worked for Miley but not as much for Barnes. I've been saying ever since he made the change that there isn't enough of a mph differential between his fastball and cutter. Definitely needs to go back to 4-seamer + slider.

Thank you for the info! You know that-I know that- Brewers and Barnes wrong on this one. Although I haven’t seen him pitch this spring, maybe he back to high 90s FB and slider?

When I saw he was DFA'd I thought he had Stearns written all over him. Then I was surprised when he cleared waivers and sat there. If all it took was a minor league deal I can't believe no one scooped him up sooner.

Very possibly he was intrigued by signing with a team that puts more value on relievers than many other teams. I'm sure he's got an opt out if not brought up by a certain time too.

Stearns maybe knows something we don’t with jeffress. Or is as concerned with pen as some of us are, or thinks jj be ok and just wants massive depth.

Stearns literally said in an interview today that they expect Jeffress to be ready to roll by mid- to late April. I don't know why we wouldn't take him at his word.

I don't see Petricka being anything other than an AAA filler. He has been awful for the last three years. 79.1 IPs - 30 BBs and 6 HBPs - a monstrous 107 hits and 54 runs allowed. A horrible ERA of 6.13 and an awful WHIP of 1.73! Nothing in his past says he'll do better, especially in a park like the Brewer's. Even Barnes is a better option. I think Fields makes the team ahead of Barnes and Petricka.

One thing to consider is Fields has over 5 years service time so he can refuse any assignment to the minors after he is added to the 40 man and gets called up. Therefore, being so close to Opening Day my guess is he begins the year in the minors.

  • 5 weeks later...

in 10 days, the brewers will have to make a decision on josh fields. they'll be five days into a 13-game stretch without a scheduled off day, so that may factor in their decision.

even if the brewers opt to not select his contract, fields can opt to stay with the team until his next opt-out date of 25 june.
