Kimbrel?

The Cubs getting Kimbrel would be a pretty devastating blow in the short term. It might bite them long term a bit if he doesn't age well, but they are 2-4 years away from a teardown anyways. Might as well go all-in at this point, especially just for cash. And an effective Kimbrel is going to have nearly a Josh Hader caliber impact on their biggest current weakness. They become scary good if/when Strop/Morrow ever come back and their SP can hold up.

One thing that plagued Kimbrel late last season were walks. Over his last 30 innings pitched (including the playoffs) he walked 23 batters. It will be interesting to see if that was just a small blip or continues to be an issue moving forward.
Not just “at Night” anymore.

Rosenthal tweet

#Cubs pushing hard for Kimbrel, sources tell The Athletic.

At this point what does that even mean? Haven't these guys had a few days now where draft pick compensation is no longer a hindrance for teams to make contract offers? yet they're still unsigned. If losing the draft pick truly was the main reason these FA arms weren't signed (IMO it isn't), then it would seem to make sense that these guys would've been signed by now this week. On the other hand, if their contract demands remain unrealistic relative to what the market is willing to offer, then they're going to continue sitting on their couches awhile longer until either they or some team blink and dramatically change their asking price/contract offer.

I still think the Twins are going to get one of these two guys.

Cubs president of baseball operations Theo Epstein told reporters that the Cubs will do their "due diligence" on free agent reliever Craig Kimbrel.

A recent report from Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic stated that the Cubs are "pushing hard" to sign Kimbrel now that he's no longer tied to draft-pick compensation. Epstein obviously wasn't going to come out and say that, but he didn't seem to deny that there's interest, either. The Twins have also been mentioned as a contender for Kimbrel, and it sounds like we could know where the star closer is playing sooner than later. About time.

BREAKING: #Cubs in agreement with free-agent closer Craig Kimbrel, pending physical, sources tell The Athletic.

Way to go Stearns...let him go to your biggest freaking rival. I thought the Cubs talked all offseason about how they couldn't sign anyone because of monetary concerns?? If the Brewers finish second in the division...it's on Stearns. I thought they were "going for it"??
