RIP Dick Beyer aka Doctor X

Old timers like me might remember Doctor X, the masked superheel from the AWA. He was known as The Destroyer in other territories. The man behind the mask, Dick Beyer passed away yesterday at age 88.

 

As a kid, I found him captivating, and I even convinced my mom to let me put his figure four leg lock on her, which led to her submission. The goal of many of his opponents was to unmask Doctor X, and there were times that Verne Gagne and others came close, but they never could.

 

RIP, Doctor X. You were awesome!

From what I vaguely remember, as The Destroyer, he was also basically the first American wrestler to become a really huge star in Japan. A true legend indeed.
