Re Amos

Amos, meanwhile, was one of the highest-graded safeties in the league last season for the Bears, according to Pro Football Focus. He ranked No. 8 overall; for some perspective, the top Packers safety was Tramon Williams, a 35-year-old converted cornerback who ranked 67th.

I love snagging a guy from the Bears. makes them weaker, makes us stronger, and he knows their scheme.

I think Amos at 5/$20 million is an incredible value if those numbers are true. So glad we did that instead of handing Collins the keys to Lambeau.

All I want now out of FA is an OL, really any position on the line. Even if it's just a quality back-up. Or a vet WR with a little something left in the tank. I'll take either one of those, the rest is gravy since they can address other needs in the draft.

Two big upgrades on defense is awesome, and I think there's a chance a couple of the young guys (Burks, King, Jones) can improve- that's what could turn the defense from an improved defense into a really good defense. ,

(Also, interesting but not surprising nobody jumped on Matthews early.)

Matthews is definitely in that 2nd tier of free agent signings. I'm guessing he'll get a short-term deal from $7-8 million per year.

My worthless gut feeling is that the Packers bring Matthews back. He's not a bad player at the right price, he just wasn't living up to the annual salary from his big money deal. I think he would want to come back, which may bring the price down too. A one-year prove-it deal would be my guess.

Also signing Preston Smith?

Everything's coming up Milhouse!

I guess that's it for Clay Matthews and definitely Nick Perry. It has been real, fellas. Claymaker, we'll always have 2010 and 2012, and you'll always have a ring.

Perry, we'll always have 2016, and you'll have...millions and millions of dollars. Be sure to give that TT contract to your agent so he can tape it to his fridge. That has to be a career highlight for that guy.

He’s more of a run stuffer isn’t he? Would have to sign him for less than what we save cutting Perry for that to make sense.

Nope ... very underrated edge rusher and run defender. He's the better of the two Smiths. Huge, huge upside with him. He was on my wishlist, but I figured he'd be way out of their price range.

He started every game last year and had 4 sacks. His grades in the article I read were good against run but like a 62 as a pass rusher. What am I missing? They just not use him as a true edge rusher?

PRESTON SMITH

LB, GREEN BAY PACKERS

Packers agreed to terms with OLB Preston Smith, formerly of the Redskins.

It has been a busy Tuesday morning in Green Bay with the Packers already adding S Adrian Amos and OLB Za'Darius Smith. Pass rusher was one of Green Bay's biggest needs heading into free agency, so it is not surprising they double dipped at outside linebacker. Smith only recorded four sacks last year, but he had eight the year before and still consistently created pressure last season. - Rotoworld

NFL players have this all screwed up. Free agency doesn't even begin until tomorrow, and it seems like half of them already have deals lined up. Technically, they weren't even supposed to have contact with other teams until yesterday...how can these deals get done so fast? How can they make sure they are getting the best deal? Scott Boras clearly needs to get involved here! Get good offers. Turn them down and wait for a better offer. Wait until well into spring training/training camp if necessary. If you don't get the desired price-tag, then cry about collusion and stingey owners. The NFL really needs Scott Boras to make their off-season more interesting!!

Pressure statistics are so scheme dependent, it's almost useless to look at. Sacks are entirely useless to look at. He's credited with 57 pressures last season, but the biggest thing that stands out to me is that the dude is a 6'6 "linebacker." Teams look for skill sets to use in their scheme, not statistics. I'm sure they have a plan for how they want to use him. I'm just so glad the Thompson era is over. We would have filled this hole with a 5th round pick from Saginaw Valley State four years ago.

You look at someone like Anthony Barr who is a "pass rusher" on paper but when you pick apart his sacks, not one came against an OL. He basically has a ton of unblocked sacks from playing in such a great scheme.

Even with dumping Perry, these 3 contracts have to be close to what we had to spend

Yep ... I imagine the big expenditures are done. We may see some trades now, and maybe another safety brought in on a value deal. They still have holes at ILB, TE, G and arguably T and slot WR. Perhaps Matthews and/or Ryan being resigned to short-term, team-friendly deals can shore up ILB. I think they address TE and OL through the draft early. For the rest, let the dumpster diving begin!

That makes way more sense than 4/20. There's no way he was that cheap.

yeah that was way off
