You da' man, Toby. I'm sure you've learned a lot about Canadian geography, which might come in useful never, but you did a great job the last two days. Kudos on the superb draft coverage!

With the elimination of the formal Brewer Dominican and Venezuelan League teams, I know the Brewers said they'd still have a presence in the Latin countries, but would focus on smaller samples there and bring those kids directlly to Arizona in the future. This year's holdovers will represent the last fairly large contingent of young latin Maryvale / Helena talent to come over in one group.

With the naming of an extensive Canadian scouting staff last summer and the obvious focus on the Great White North this week in the draft, it sure appears that the Brewers hope to be "the" MLB presence above the border, eh?

Jack Z. noted on tonight's pre-game show that they took somewhat of a different direction with all of the Canadian signings. Not so much in the number of picks, which was obvious, but how they plan to use those picks. He strongly implied that they would follow these players as DFE candidates through next spring, noting that they would be playing stateside next spring in college. This makes a lot of sense, since they can't play in our system this summer anyway. I'm not sure how many of these guys have commitments to D1 programs, but I think it could say a lot about the jobs our Canadians scouts did this spring, possibly convincing a few of them to head to a JC so they could be followed through next year.

So, don't be surprised if we see a lot of unsigned picks this summer. A good chunk of them, including players selected on day 1 will still be under our control. I wonder if this will allow them to aggressively pursue someone like Drew Bowman. Jack Z. also noted that Wahpepah might take a little bit more to sign, since he turned down a deal to sign as a DFE with the Tigers a week before the draft.
