Chase Anderson 1st ST appearance

No kidding! It's the first Spring Training game of the season.

Anderson is actually my pick to bounce back and have a very good season this year. I think he's got a chip on his shoulder after being left out of the playoffs last year, and he's a super-competitive guy anyway. I think he's going to surprise most everyone this year and look a lot like that near ace-type that he was in 2017. If you look at his numbers, other than the propensity to give up gopher balls (which admittedly is a bad thing), his numbers were very good if not great last year. If he has figured out what caused the decrease in velocity last year, he could be very good again.

Anderson had one good year in 2017. Before that he was an average pitcher at best. Last year he was his average self. I hope he regains his 2017 magic, but there is no or little indication he is anything more than an average or slightly below average pitcher.

Over his career, Anderson has given up 1 home run about every 6 2/3 innings pitched. 2017 was a fluke year in that regard as the ratio dropped to about 1 home run in every 10 innings pitched. Giving up home runs is just going to be part of his game. But overall he's done a decent job of limiting the home run damage as evidenced by his career 3.89 ERA versus his career 4.48 FIP.

Anderson has pretty severe splits with runners on versus bases empty...

Last three seasons with Milwaukee...

BE: 239/310/455, 4.8 IP/HR

RO: 230/303/384, 10.6 IP/HR

I wonder if they've tried to talk him into maybe ditching the windup & going out of the stretch full time since he gives up so many more HR with the bases empty.

Interesting observation. Good catch. I know I’ve seen that before, I think mainly with relievers. But I’m drawing a blank on a good example for a starter. Do you recall any starters who did this for any appreciable amount of time? I’m curious.

Darvish.

I would guess Chase gives up more homeruns with no runners on because he's just throwing more strikes and attacking without the fear of any old ball in play resulting in runs scoring. His OBP is the same in both situations so it's not he's losing control and walking guys.

I could have sworn I read an article in the JS about how Chase revamped his mechanics with the new pitching coach and the bullpen coach Karsay, but I can't find it. Seems like he was motivated to make the changes due to being left off the playoff roster. Perhaps we should have a poll who's offseason tweaks will work out better, Anderson's or Braun's.

There was a video interview about it:

"Dustin Pedroia doesn't have the strength or bat speed to hit major-league pitching consistently, and he has no power......He probably has a future as a backup infielder if he can stop rolling over to third base and shortstop." Keith Law, 2006

Which is yet another reason why the early results should be taken with a salt lick sized grain of salt.

Also, when you only have one point of data, you can draw any regression line through it.

Also there was an Athletic article about his mechanics. Behind pay wall.
