The Positional Versatility of the 2019 Brewers

clancyphile

Just was looking over the 40-man, and I am quite excited about the versatility on tap - probably one of the most under-estimated aspects of this team.

Grandal - C/1B

Pina - C/1B

Kratz - C/P/1B

Nottingham - C/1B (minors)

Aguilar - 1B/3B/LF (minors)/RF (Venezuela)

Arcia - SS/2B (minors)

Dubon - SS (minors)/2B (minors)/3B (minors)/CF (AFL)

Moustakas - 3B/1B/SS (minors)

Perez - P/SS/2B/3B/1B/LF/RF/CF

Saladino - SS/2B/3B/1B/LF/CF/RF

Shaw - 3B/1B/2B/LF

Spangenberg - 2B/3B/LF/CF/P

Thames - 1B/LF/RF

Braun - LF/RF/3B/1B/CF

Cain - CF/RF/LF

Gamel - LF/RF/CF/1B

Stokes - LF (minors)/CF (minors)/RF (minors)

Taylor - CF (minors)/LF (minors)/RF (minors)

Yelich - LF/CF/RF

All in all, it is quite impressive - ALL of the players in the position player group are versatile - and can fill in elsewhere when needed.

Man way to fluff it up with positions no player would ever seriously play. Braun is not going to 3B or CF, Aguilar is not playing 3B, Moustakas at SS, and I don't get listing anyone at pitcher.

They are quite versatile though and most everyone could be sneaked at a position elsewhere if they were dying to find offense towards the end of the game. Aguilar is probably the least versatile as he probably can't play anywhere but 1B. I guess he could even play 3B in a serious pinch...but that is a pretty bad defensive risk.

Perez, Spangenberg, and Kratz have seen some action on the mound in the majors. That's something to keep in mind... either for a long game (cheese sandwiches?) or in a blowout - one way or the other.

I also put down positions where some of these players had put in time in their pro careers. Part of it is to note where someone can be "sneaked" - but the Brewers have a lot of options.

Being able to fill in here and there is one thing, but being competent to the point where a guy can play regularly at a position for an extended period, nobody comes close to Perez.

My thinking exactly. It's why I consider him an extension candidate. For about $4.5 to $5 million a year, you get a solid sub at seven positions, an emergency catcher, and an extra pitcher. It doesn't show up in the box score, or the season stats, but it may mean two or three more wins.
