Sports Illustrated: Top 100 Players

I won't ruin the surprise for you with the placements of Brewers. However, something of interest:

6 Brewers are on the list

7 former Brewers/Brewers prospects are on the list

Without doing the research, gotta wonder if that is the most for a team.

Stopped reading after #100, literally. No prospect with zero MLB experience should appear on such a list.

I don't see why not. The list is predictive & there is a very good chance that VGJ is a top 100 player in baseball this year.

I remember FanGraphs did a Franchise Player draft back in 2011 & Carson Cistulli got absolutely roasted for picking Mike Trout at #3 when he had yet to play a game above AA. Turns out he should have gone #1,

I also remember similar sentiments for mark prior, justin upton, jay bruce, byron buxton, and dozens of other highly regarded prospects who failed to live up to the HOF level hype before they reached the majors. There is only 1 mike trout...kudos to cistulli for mining that nugget when he did, but using trout as any example for comparison as a prospect is pretty foolish.

I think the list in general is ok, but any top 100 in a league of 30 teams that tries to include both hitters and pitchers is going to leave off a bunch of deserving names.

It isn’t predictive. It’s an article that literally docks players for not being proven (Yelich) and then has a guy like Guerrero in the Top 100 who hasn’t even played in the MLB. He isn’t even an MLB baseball player. He doesn’t even qualify for a Top 100 MLB player list.

I would say that there is very little chance that Guerrero is a top 100 player this year. A top player right now is different than a franchise player draft, Trout was also nowhere near a top 100 player in 2011. The author is trying to be too cute.

There have been lots of hyped #1 prospects who flamed out so I don't think that means very much that he lucked out, but rereading that draft is pretty hilarious for how absurdly wrong everybody was in terms of 2019 value.

1. Evan Longoria

2. Troy Tulowitzki

4. Ryan Zimmerman

6. Albert Pujols

7. Carl Crawford

8. Jose Bautista

9. Miguel Cabrera

13. Hanley Ramirez

14. Jayson Heyward

16. Adrian Gonzalez

17. Jay Bruce

18. Felix Hernandez

19. Matt Kemp

Granted we are now over seven years down the line, but those picks are all pretty atrocious in hindsight :laughing

VGJ is more highly regarded now than either Acuna or Soto were at this time last year & they are at #32 & #37 on the SI list. Given his likely impact this year 100 could end up being too low.

Steamer (which is notoriously conservative on players with no MLB track record) projects VGJ for the 13th highest wRC+ (138) in MLB for 2019 ahead of guys like Goldschmidt, Votto, Freeman, Judge, Turner, Altuve, etc.

Sure, plenty of highly regarded prospects haven't panned out, but how many of them hit .400 in AA with a 10% K rate at age 19?

Disappointing they had to mention Hader's social media issue...

Well some people think he is a punk/turd. Therefore, according to some on this site, they are not as good.

If this is in reference to the comments in the Machado thread, no one has ever said Machado wasn't good, just that he is a turdy human being...

The whole point of these lists is to get people agitated to sell magazines and get clicks. Couldn't care less what it says.

Exactly, I was half expecting them to list Trout #2 with Betts #1 and say Betts won the MVP blah blah and really get people all worked up

Yahoo has Vlad Jr. as the #39 player overall in fantasy drafts...

Geez, the kid hasn't hit one single MLB pitch and he is already being touted as the 39th best player in all of baseball? (for fantasy purposes anyway)

That is pretty shocking.

Glad I was able to stash im in two of my 3 keeper leagues. The more I read on this kid, the more likely I am to hang onto him.

Keep him Turbo. He’s like Giannis attacking the rim against a 6 foot 3 inch shooting guard. The probability is that it’s gonna end in a slam dunk. I really haven’t heard minor league experts talk with this much certainty in quite awhile.
