My personal feeling is that they are going to be regretting this contract in a few years. I'm happy he went there and not to the Phillies or Yankees, though.

He’s 26 and a 5-7 WAR player every year at a prime position. There’s little reason to think his value will go down the next few years.

He's a generational talent, but also comes off as lazy and entitled. Those are the types that get their huge money and go into coast-mode. Perhaps coast-mode for him is still All-Star-type numbers. It's just my personal feeling, which could very well be wrong. perhaps I just don't like the guy, and am letting that bias seep in.

The guy on the Rays' current staff, before he was doing it, deemed that $6 million was the max you should spend on a player from a business standpoint (not baseball).

So you're both right and not right. It's not going to be worth their investment from a marketing standpoint...but that's because in baseball, no one is. Machado could be an awful franchise spokesman and it's not going to make a difference.

The Padres will regret this deal. I don't see Machado being motivated enough for this to pay off now that he can count on $300 million in the bank no matter how he plays.

Yeah... I'd rather have spent $45 million over four years on Moose and played him at short (which he hasn't played since full-season A ball in 2008). Maybe the numbers wouldn't be as good, but Moose is a good teammate and doesn't mess up the clubhouse chemistry.

Honestly good for Manny in waiting it out...

I have no good thoughts for Manny on this, I was hoping the poor guy would get stuck only making 25 million per season...

The Dodgers just played in the World Series. But the Brewers were...happier?

If you're going to give 300 million to somebody I guess a 26 year old 3B\SS is the guy to take a chance on. Thoughts on his hustle aside, he's in the lineup every day.

I'd take him over Harper at $300 million.

I'm the exact opposite. Harper isn't going to get lazy. I think Manny is already there.

I've seen on twitter, Padres GM saying no deal is done. White Sox seem baffled in that they thought they were the high offer on the table. I guess I'm not 100% certain the drama is over with MM's free agency.

Also if MM truly gets $300M, what will Harper get? Have to believe he'll be $1-2 million more per year and possibly an 11th year?

Conversely, Bryce Harper right now is an above average/really good bat and a pedestrian defender.

So he can try as hard as he wants and still not be as impactful to a team as Machado.

How many generational talents are there at one time? There are 2 infielders (Altuve, Donaldson) over the last 6 years that have better WAR than Manny... So 3 players at a time are generational talent?

Competitively, it's like he's going away for a while, isn't it? Can't see SD being a contender this year. It's a win for the Brewers because he's not pushing the Phillies, Cubs or Dodgers over the top. And what will his offensive numbers look like at Petco?

I'll agree this is far better than him going to the Cubs/Dodgers/Phillies THIS YEAR, but it would have be nice to saddle the cubs with another trash contract in 5 years when MM is bad. And I also don't know that the Padres can't compete this year. They have so much young talent that could arrive this year, along with a few strong/established players.

What happens if (when?) the Padres and Reds finish with win totals in the mid-70s. Will anyone ever spend money again?

At least the Padres are going to get several years of (likely) elite production with the best farm system in the game that will be producing MLB players soon. The Reds just traded for a bunch of free agents to be to still be at best the 4th best team in their division.

The Cubs will probably be in the dumpster regardless in 5 years and beginning a rebuild. A rebuild that is probably long enough that having Machado for 3-5 more years isn't a huge issue.

We're talking way out, but their cycle will probably be competitive until 2023 or 2024 and rebuilding until 2027. It will be like the Braun situation where having a 3 year moderately large deal remaining is not going to cripple you.

Manny has no interest in going to San Diego. It's pretty clear he wanted to be a Yankee. I can't imagine he's going to be all that enthusiastic about playing there, especially since they aren't going to be winning anything for a few years. I also think he's going to force a trade to the Yankees in a coupe of years, and the Padres wind up eating a bunch of that contract and getting pretty much nothing in return. Same as what happened with Giancarlo.

Yea if you actually look at Manny's hitting stats and ignore the hype he's not thaaaat good/ridiculous. Of course a good player/hitter considering he can play 3B/SS but his offensive stat lines haven't been uncommon. Heck, his 2017 was actually bad.

Padres currently have MLB.com's #2, 15, 23, 26, 34, 48, 49 prospects

They will need them because their roster is very meh even with Machado.

I think at least three of them are supposed to be up this year. Larger point being that they should be very competitive in due time.
