Brewers sign RHP Jay Jackson to MILB Contract w Camp Invite

JDBrewCrew
apparently, jackson's contract allowed him to become a free agent at the end of the 2019 season, regardless of whether or not he was on his club's 40-man roster.

with three options intact, jackson will be attractive to many teams.

How does Jackson's contract supercede major league rules regarding FA? Jackson isn't even eligible for arbitration until 2022.

i'm going to guess that he had some leverage in playing overseas for a number of years, just as eric thames had in negotiating his contract with the brewers (i.e. thames can declare free agency next year even though he won't have six years of major league service).

Thames's contract contains a provision where the Brewers agreed they will not tender him a contract after 2020 despite their being arbitration eligibility, which will result in Thames becoming a free agent following 2020.

Jackson isn't arbitration eligible so maybe he obtained a contract provision where the Brewers forgo their right to renew his contract and must release him. However, it seems kind of risky from a player's financial standpoint when they finish the season on a 25 man roster to have such an out clause.

I can't imagine any player signing a minor league contract having that kind of leverage.

if the brewers don't want him back, i bet jackson is regretting this deal. any team could have claimed him (with three options intact) earlier this year, but passed.

without the non-tender clause, jackson likely remains on the club's 40-man at least through spring training.

i'm thinking that the brewers will make him an offer.

I don't think he will regret the opt out clause, there should be plenty of teams willing to offer him a 40 man spot. His numbers post DFA were quite a bit better, teams can do much worse at the back end of the pen especially with options remaining.

In the past, players back from Japan (like Tony Barnette or Logan Ondrusek) were granted free agency despite their ML services were not enough. But they were given guaranteed major league contracts with opt out clause (probably).

I don’t believe that Jay Jackson’s minor league contract contains the same clause……

I don’t know whether Jay Jackson will be granted free agency or not.

But, it is certain that his three options are not intact. One option was used this year.

His total option days were less than 20 days this season, but he was outrighted in May and spent more than 20 days in minors until purchased back in July.

If a player (whose option remained) is outrighted (taken off from 40-man roster) after the beginning of spring training, then spend 20 or more days in minor leagues, and purchased (promoted back to 40-man roster) by the same team during the same season, his option is used, as well as actually optioned player.

Please check the Major league Rules MLR11(j) “REACQUIRING PLAYER” (3),

(3) In the event that a player has Major League options remaining at the time of the player's assignment to a Minor League Club and the contract is reacquired by the assignor Club after 20 or more days of the Major League championship season have elapsed from the date of the assignment, such player shall be credited with a Major League option.
