Some news for you at-home Opening Day roster prognosticators: The Brewers were granted a fourth option on right-hander Adrian Houser.

And here's a little options primer

Nice for maintaining depth.

Excellent news indeed. If not for the 4th option I would have been disappointed if he didn't make the opening day roster. In my mind, the 4th option is basically like the Brewers just picked up an additional talented pitcher because of the roster flexibility it enables. Additionally, now Houser isn't necessarily stuck in a bullpen role, at least to begin the season.

I'm curious why he wouldn't have been granted this option honestly. The rules I've read seem to state that if a player misses a whole option year with an injury (as Houser did), then they can be granted a 4th option year.

I'm curious what the other circumstances must be here though, if it's possible that a player may NOT be granted the 4th option year.

Anyways, this was good news for the Brewers (and bad news for the player) last year with Guerra, hoping things work out positively for the Brewers again this time, and I think Houser could benefit from coming along slowly this year and not necessarily having to stick in a bullpen or risk getting outrighted. Hope it works out for all involved, as Houser seems like he could develop into a decent back-end starter or a valuable relief arm.

The issue was that Houser never missed a full season - he missed a calendar year+. If I understand what happened correctly, the Brewers had to appeal because Houser missed large chunks of two different seasons that added up to more than one season.

injuries come into play in these situations. had he not vomited on the mound last season, the fourth option would not have been granted.

Is that sarcasm or are you being serious? That seems like a pretty strange determining factor.
