Brewers sign Brett Lawrie? [Latest: Brewers Release Lawrie]

Lathund
his head is in the right place, this could be a steal.

That's the big question right there. I don't think there is any debate when looking at the history of this player. He's a million dollar talent with a 10 cent head. I don't think it's too late for him. But his patience will likely be tried with the Brewers because he'll start the year in the minors and Hiura and Erceg have to be considered the favorites to play 2B and 3B in AAA to start the year. Lawrie probably has to start in AA and work his way back up. I'm surprised the Brewers could even find a spot for him. Hopefully this is not an indication that Stearns just doesn't think that Erceg is a major league player.

I doubt that Erceg would have gotten a spring training invite if they were that down on him. It wouldn't shock me if he spent the first half of the year in AA, though. He did struggle most of last year, so I don't know that an automatic promotion is a given.

I think Lawrie would have been a better player 2015-16 if he wasn't kind of a nut job and bouncing around teams. I think it's possible he could have a career year in an age 30 or 31 season, I don't know how long it's going to take him to get back to baseball shape though.
I tried to log in on my iPad. Turns out it was an etch-a-sketch and I don't own an iPad. Also, I'm out of vodka.

Meh. Whatever.

One of the really great things about last year's team was the absence of knobs (other than maybe Braun).

Not a huge deal, but Lawrie is a class A knob.

This is a pretty ridiculous statement. Everything we've heard is how Braun is a terrific, supportive teammate.

Things Brewers fans will apparently never let go of:

- Hank Aaron admitted to taking a "greenie" once.

- Paul Molitor used cocaine in the '80s.

- Ryan Braun took banned substances.

- Josh Hader made some offensive tweets when he was in high school.

- And I guess now, Brett Lawrie had his photo taken while doing dumb frat boy type stuff.

I sometimes think no other fan base is harder on their own players than Brewers fans.

Ehh, Cubs fans were cursing the Murphy trade even as he was playing for them(and playing well) because of previous homophobic comments. That's admittedly worse than Josh Hader and others considering how recently they were made...but I don't think this type of nonsense is specific to Brewer fans.

:laughing

Lot of reaction to what was basically a throw away comment. I don't care about Braun's past much, but some do.

And yeah I forgot about Hader. Although I really didn't hold that against him much personally. He was 17. Dumb stuff occurs at that age

Also, Lawrie is by many accounts a knob, and it certainly isn't because of the duct tape/beer picture when he was 18 or whatever.

Lawrie was reportedly pulled from games in AA for not running hard. Braun often makes routine plays look very close due to his hustle.

Hopefully Brett has learned and been humbled. We could use him to show his energy/hustle, with a new sense of leadership and patience.

Sounded like you were calling Braun a knob, and that was based on his past, what else could it have been?

That statement looks more like you do care since you called him a knob...

I'm not holding my breath for Lawrie, but I'd sure love it if this turns out well for both him & the Brewers. Depth is that much better when it translates into success at the MLB level.

In his early years I was highly unimpressed with what I perceived his character to be based on the reports many have referenced (directly or otherwise). I'd hope he's grown (or, as it may pertain, grown up) considerably compared to 10 years ago in the same way I think we'd all hope for ourselves that we've grown a lot over the same time span, no matter our current age.

Would just hate to see this turn into another Jeremy Jeffress case. Hate to see it

I don't understand what you're saying. Jeffress has been extremely successful since he returned to the Brewers. If Lawrie can replicate Jeffress's success, it means that the Brewers just added an ll-Star bat to the lineup.

Please, please explain what you're getting at here, because I don't see a downside.

You haven't heard that expression before? Guess I should've realized not everyone would understand. Yes I would just hate to see Brett turn into an All-star like Jeremy did. Hate to see him find his way with the team that drafted him. Hate to see it.

Thanks ... sorry for my dense-ness. Sometimes it's hard to tell around here if people are being serious. For instance, there were a few posters ready to DFA Jeffress following his hiccups in the playoffs last year. Gotta see the forest through the trees sometimes ;)

Will he be moving back to catcher?

I totally forgot he was drafted as a catcher.

He has a kid coming soon. He wouldn't be the first young punk athlete to turn himself around after becoming a parent. So there's that.

That certainly helps, the more obvious motivation is probably not earning the paycheck he was used to for a couple years. Guys with one foot out the door tend to have every motivation to try and get back in the game. That's basically where Wade Miley was heading into 2018.

Don't kick yourself. You weren't the only one wondering on that post.
