Yes, it says the Brewers are expected to sign Luis Medina, a 6’2” left handed outfielder from Venezuela. They mention he has big power projection and a chance to stick in centerfield.

 

That article also includes a few international prospects that aren’t tied to any specific team currently.

MLB Pipeline put out there top 30 International Prospects. Brewers linked to the previously mentioned Medina. He came in at #13. Scouting report is below.

 

Luis Medina | Rank: 13 Hometown: Aragua, Venezuela

Position: OF Age: 16 DOB: 2/24/2003

Bats: L Throws: L Height: 6'2" Weight: 168 lb.

Scouting grades: Hit 50 | Power: 60 | Run: 45 | Arm: 50 | Field: 50

Power is always enticing to teams and scouts and that's exactly what Medina brings to the table. The 6-foot-2 outfielder has an easy, majestic swing with well-above-average power and the ability to hit to all fields.

 

Defensively, Medina has a chance to play center field, but he could wind up outgrowing that position and moving to a corner outfield spot. If that's the case, he still projects to be an average defender with an above-average arm in the future. Medina could lose a bit of his speed as he grows and fills out his frame, but he has strong natural instincts that would help compensate in the field.

 

Alexis Quiroz of the AQ Sport Agency in Venezuela represents Medina, who is expected to sign with the Brewers.

 

 

Article had the following note as well, "In terms of spending, the Yankees, A’s, Giants, Rangers, Royals, Pirates, Padres, Marlins, Rockies, Twins and Cubs are expected to be aggressive in the upcoming signing period. The Angels, Brewers, Indians, Blue Jays and Rockies are also expected to be very active."

You cannot undervalue this "day". Mlb.com recently did an article that had each team's highest current international prospect. All but two teams had one in their top eight and all but four teams had one in their top five. The Brewers top one currently checks in at #18, but they do have five teenagers between #18 and #24. Hopefully this is an area that the Brewers under the direction of Mike Groopman are improving in. Hopefully the international bonus pools have leveled the playing fields, as previously some of the big market teams have been able to dominate the market and then use the talented international players on the field or via trade.

All’s fair now in both drafts, but the Yankees Dodgers Cubbies Red Sox still with the advantage having their yougins from pre bonus pool still maturing now, but a couple years from now it’s a new ball game.

Holy Venezuela, Brewers really love mining there.

I know very little about the International Signing date. Can anyone with more knowledge share: is getting 4 guys in the Top 100 good for a team like the Brewers? I see that we had one of the highest bonus pools this year, so I'm assuming that we should have gotten a decent haul of players, but how does this compare to other teams? Nice to see that we got the Medina kid who is pretty highly thought of, but I guess I was hoping we'd have 1-2 more guys in the MLB Pipeline Top 30 list.

I think its fine at this point. Given that there are 30 teams and the Brewers probably are still lagging the NY and LAs of the world in international scouting budget beyond bonus pool; landing (1) top 15 and (4) top 100 prospects seems like we are competitive. The bonus pools aren’t that much different; 10% or so and nearly half the teams qualify for the additional money. I still think its odd the Brewers largely ignore pitching prospects.

The Brewers are taking an aggressive approach to the international market and adding one of the top outfielders in this year’s class to their system.

 

According to industry sources, the Brewers have agreed to a deal worth an estimated $1.3 million with outfielder Luis Medina, No. 13 on MLB Pipeline’s Top 30 International Prospects list.

The Brewers have also been linked to shortstop Albert Ciprian for a deal expected to be in the $750,000 range.

• Top 30 International Prospects

 

Ciprian is a gap-to-gap hitter with power potential. On defense, he shows good hands and an emerging arm. He could move to third base.

 

According to the rules established by the Collective Bargaining Agreement, clubs that receive a Competitive Balance Pick in Round B of the Rule 4 Draft receive a pool of $6,481,200 for international prospects, while clubs that receive a Competitive Balance Pick in Round A of the Rule 4 Draft -- like the Brewers -- get $5,939,800 for spending on international prospects.

 

Teams are allowed to trade as much of their international pool money as they would like, but can only acquire 60 percent of a team's initial pool amount. Additionally, signing bonuses of $10,000 or less do not count toward a club's bonus pool, and foreign professional players who are at least 25 years of age and have played in a foreign league for at least six seasons are also exempt.

 

Under the previous system, teams were penalized for exceeding their bonus pools with consequences that ranged from taxes on their spending to the maximum penalty, which was being prohibited from signing any prospect for more than $300,000 during the next two signing periods. That’s no longer the case and there are no longer penalties. Teams can only spend their allotted bonus pools and the monies acquired via trade.

I still think its odd the Brewers largely ignore pitching prospects.

I'm guessing they (and others) find it more difficult to project pitchers at ages 15-16. Looking at the top thirty, there are only 6 pitchers on the list, the highest being #16.

It seems so weird that they sign a 16 year old for $1.3 million, more than Hader and Woodruff are making combined this year.

 

Nothing against Medina. He deserves whatever he can get. It's just odd, to me.
