If you made a team out of current free agents, not including Kuechel, Machado, Harper and Kimbrel, would they be the worst team in baseball? Old and slow...... Yes. Terrible...... no. We were bored ice fishing.

Even if you added Harper, Machado, Kuechel, and Kimbrel they would still probably be the worst team in baseball. That pitching is terrible. And the offense would basically be Machado and Harper with a little Marwin Gonzalez throw in.

That team could win some games against Baltimore, but there aren't too many teams that wouldn't win against that club.

There's a reason most free agents are free agents at this point. It's not because they are good.

A lot of those guys have been good players, but they're not necessarily still nearly as good as they used to be.

 

The "name" factor is pretty high. Shields & Gio, for instance were top-eschelon pitchers for a good while, but that was a little while ago. Same could be said for a number of those other names.

 

All could maybe re-reach previous heights, but it's also possible none will come anywhere close to how well they've done before.

 

I think the main reason most of those guys are still available is that a) teams aren't going to overpay for past performance and/or b) players' contract expectations may not be realistic compared to what the market seems to be willing to pay for their actual recent performance level.
