I don't get the hate for Perez. I get to see out of town telecasts of every Brewer game. Out of town guys in the booth particularly within the division who see him a lot, often sing his praises for doing a lot of the little things that win games. He's a terrific baserunner. He makes heads up plays all over the diamond. He's not just versatile, he's good wherever he plays and he's a smart player. The one criticism is valid is that at times he tries to do too much at the plate and goes up there with a swing mentality. Every guy does that from time to time, but Perez tends to do too much. I think he presses because even though he's a total team guy, like every player, deep down he feels he's an everyday player and wants to contribute to stay in the lineup. If he gets more AB's I think he'll relax more and his ability as a hitter will come through.

I bet Mike Moustakas isn't particularly thrilled with being a Boras client the last 15 months or so.

I think if any collusion exists, it's directed solely at Boras. I think owners got a bit ticked off by some of the deals he was able to scrape up for his clients and are trying to get rid of him. I have 0 evidence to support this, it's also possible that hardball tactics simply aren't working anymore and other agents have accepted this much moreso than Boras.

I am 100% fine with the platoon if it means they will upgrade the pitching before ST.

I don't see Stearns adding any more payroll. If he can trade Thames and his $7M ($6M + $1M 2020 buyout) contract he may look at Miley. Gio is worse than any of the three young guys CC can run out there and there isn't any other FA worth spending money on. Maybe a trade, but not many teams looking at trading starters unless it's for a contract dump. With the payroll being around $120M there doesn't seem to be much room to make another move.

Here again with the "room to make a move" idea. Where is this coming from? At no time since Attanasio purchased the team has there been a set payroll limit. Yes, there have been years with low payrolls, but he has never outwardly put a cap on spending. Ever since Stearns has come on board, the idea stated over and over again is that if there are pieces that can make the team better, the acquisition will be made. They are big believers in value, but that seemingly is the only budget restriction, and it is ever-moving.

This is fine but you’re going too far the other way on it and getting annoyed at posters for really no reason. There are limits. We just don’t know them. I’m sure they are a believer in value but it doesn’t mean much as all teams are looking for value. Most people should be able to see that unless a true talent falls into their laps, they’re not stretching themselves.

"This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.

Of course you are right. Of course there is a limit. Its just those posters who are speaking in absolutes regarding the team's payroll limitations. I'm thinking the only people who truly know that are Mark Attanasio, his wife, and maybe his accountant.

There is a reason I want to see the Crew lock Perez up to a multi-year extension.

Maybe he is just a .730 OPS player with the bat. But he is versatile. He plays all for IF positions, all three OF positions, which lets you carry an extra pitcher. Plus, he himself is an extra pitcher as well. His only real weakness is he doesn't draw walks, but that's because as you noted, he is probably trying to make something happen.

I've been on record saying I'd do a five or six-year deal. Long? Maybe, but Perez is still young, and right now, he'd be pretty cheap (maybe in the $3 to $4 million range). More importantly, once he feels secure - he'll be staying in Milwaukee - I bet his bat might improve.

I think the "hate" around here falls into two categories. 1) A few people really just don't like him as a player- period. 2) Most posters who have issues with him think he gets used too often.

For me, it's very simple. He's a very good player when used properly- vs LHP. That said, when you're a bench or platoon player it's not always possible to avoid ABs vs RHP. When there are injuries, his versatility allows him to play anywhere which actually hurts his numbers. And there are times he will have to face RHP as a PH. But if you can limit those ABs vs RHP, he can flat out hit LHP:

2018- .783/.612

2017- .805/.678

I think we all agree Stearns is not stupid, he sees the splits and knows Perez should be facing RHP as little as possible. Just as Spangenberg should never see a LHP.

Stearns may know this, but does Counsell?

Good point, but I think he does. If you look back to last year when they were really struggling at 2B, he tried Perez there at times because that was still a better choice than the other options. One they got Moose, you didn't see Perez starting against RHP. He also had to play some OF when Braun was down.

This year, with Spangenberg and Gamel on the roster, his exposure to RHP will be limited. IF all goes according to plan.

Sometimes, as a small market team, you’ve just got to believe in your youngsters. Small market teams can’t compete for the biggest stars and they can’t overpay for depth. Eventually you have to trust your youth, the evaluators who first saw them, the minor league coaches that developed them. I think, that Stearns thinks, this is Keston’s Year. Spanerez until the all-star game and then unleash the beast. I’ll go out on a limb and say Huira has an .803 OPS the second half of the season.

In his career vs. RH starters Perez has hit .252/.286/.373. Vs. LH starters he's hit .262/.282/.411. That's not a huge difference.

The "vs Starter" splits are kind of misleading on BRef...

vs Starter batting splits are for the entire game when the starter was LH or RH

So if he got 4 PAs in a game, 2 against a lefty starter & 2 against right relievers, all 4 of those PAs count as "vs LH Starter".

His actual splits are...

vs RHP 248/281/361

vs LHP 273/293/444
