Drew Pomeranz Signs with Giants, 1/$1.5 Million

That is a great deal for a solid bounce-back candidate. Would have liked to see Stearns take that chance.

I fully agree. He would of been a nice piece to add to the back of the bullpen and start some games during the year when injuries arise. If he has a big first half, he will cost less than a million dollars for a playoff team acquiring him before the deadline. Pretty much no risk in this move that has quite a bit of upside to it. Great deal for the Giants.

I guess roster spots are the limiting factor here. You can only have so many... projects? Is that the word I'm looking for? You want to get steals in free agency, but you can't get every steal. I can see why the Brewers didn't deem this as an upgrade over what they have.

Dang it, that's a guy I would've happily taken a chance on. $1.5MM is chump change, but as CHL said, there's just no roster spot to guarantee him unless you're willing to send Davies down for sure (which I would've been).

If it doesn't work out, you're not out much.

It's possible they tried too, and he preferred SF for any number of reasons.

A lot of incentives in this contract: up to $3.5 million extra in incentives.

MLBTradeRumors mentioned that he may have been promised a rotation spot. A guaranteed rotation spot in a pitcher-friendly park is not something we could have offered.

I think the Pomeranz signing is similar to the Grandal signing for the Brewers. Both players want to maximize their ability to put up awesome numbers so that when they go into FA next year they get a deal they feel they are worth... As others have stated Pomeranz + AmFamArama Field/Park/Stadium doesn't offer the same opportunity as AT&T Park.

Now that's a contract that makes sense. I've always thought that there should be more heavily incentive laden contracts like this.

I guess that teams like to have more cost certainty--and there is potential for a lot of friction between the FO, the manager, and all the players fighting for ABs and IP because it might cost them $100K+ for each outing or game started?

Yeah, if he sucks and you take him out of the rotation, then he files a grievance because you only took him out to so you wouldn't have to pay the incentives.

Also hoping the Crew can take a low risk, high reward, chance on a guy like this a al Wade Miley last year. While I appreciate what Miley did the second half of last year and in the post season, a 3 year $30M contract or whatever he's seeking would be a stretch.
