Reds acquire Sonny Gray

That Reds' rotation is either going to be great or horrible. No in-between. I feel like that whole rotation is #4-5 starters with #2-3 upside.

Kind of like the 2018 Brewers, and it worked pretty well for us...

Sonny Gray's bbFIP's the past 3 years are 4.87, 3.75, 4.41. If they get the best result plausible from him this is an ok deal. If they get the most likely results it is a bad one. He just hasn't been a very good pitcher in recent years. Just about anyone can find success in Oakland and that is where all of his perceived value has come from. Sonny Gray is most likely a weaker pitcher than Jhoulys Chacin but getting a lot more money.

I don't know, but I get the feeling that in 10 years the 2019 Reds will be the prime example of "how to spend a ton of money and resources just to go from 67 to 79 wins"....

Yeah I have no idea what they are doing. As strong as the division is they should be selling off and rebuilding.

That's the way it looks to me but I had no idea what the Braves were doing last offseason either and it seemed to work for them. As far as looking at what the division is doing I think that is a fool's errand. Had the Brewers tried to rebuild based off of when they thought the Cubs and Cardinals would be beatable again this team would have a bunch of great AA players right about now.

There needs to be a King Thames version of the bible.

I'm a bit confused by this because the NL East was wide open last year, nobody in the division looked like a viable playoff team which seems like the perfect time to go for it.

Coming into last year the Nationals had won the division two years in a row (& four of the last six) with no major personnel losses.

Maybe the race for second place in the NL East was viewed as wide open, but everyone had the Nationals winning the division by a comfortable margin.

The Reds rebuild is already going into its 6th season IIRC. I have read on other boards that the Cinci fan base is getting restless and attendance has been dropping.

Add to that they have had front row seats to some aggressive moves/ results by the Brewers & I can understand the Reds idea of making a push any way they can..

This is pretty much it. The Reds last made the playoffs in 2013. In the five seasons since they have won an MLB worst 343 games, 10 fewer than the next worst club.

Their offense has been comparable to ours the last three years (93 wRC+/55.2 WAR vs 95 wRC+/56.5 WAR), but they've had thee worst pitching on all of MLB by a huge margin (9.2 WAR vs 24 WAR for the next worst team).

After a half decade of being comfortably the worst team in MLB you almost have to make some moves to at least give the appearance of trying. The Reds trying to fix their pitching by bringing in DJ & making the moves they have should make the NL more competitive & thus more interesting, which I can always get behind.

Right on. On paper, it looks like the Reds did all the right things. They added 2 quality SP, one of which is a bit of a bounceback candidate. They added excellent complimentary pieces to an already incredibly good offense. I'll admit I'm a bit biased based on what DJ did with our staff, but he'll have a heck of a lot more talent to work with in trying to craft the Reds staff into winners. I honestly don't see a weakness on this team besides potentially pitching, but they've done a lot to address pitching.

The thing that would terrify me as a Reds fan is that they've given up arguably more of their system than the Brewers did to bolster an inferior team...and if it does fail, they're paying Votto/Suarez/Gray $50 million 4 years from now. Suarez is probably fine, but if this doesn't work out, they could hit the 10 year mark of futility pretty easily.

I get what they're doing, though.

The Reds were linked to Realmuto a few weeks back. I wonder if they are going to try to discuss a contract extension with him as well prior to a trade? With the moves they’ve done so far this offseason, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Realmuto in the opening day lineup for the Reds. Their offense would be scary if they added him to the heart of their lineup.

Yeah your right. I am thinking of the wild cards. I just remember deciding between Atlanta and Philly for a playoff spot, that would have been a wild card.

The Reds added almost $50M to their payroll and three of the four guys will be gone next year.

I respect that they're trying to win and all, good for them and their fans. I didn't dig much into the LAD move to comment. But this one I'm skeptical on, I guess they're very confident in fixing him but you're paying him as if it's a foregone conclusion. So this seems like an overpay to a team that was basically not gonna play him due to poor performance, then you also give the guy 10+ miil per year.

If these moves work though, look out for our division. It's gonna be brutal. Heck, for the whole NL you basically only have one truly bad team in MIA. Maybe SD but they seem on the upswing with their prospects.

Exactly.... but the Reds don't have the coaching staff to do what the Brewers did... oh... wait a second....

They can at least extend the QO to Puig and recoup a pick or get him back for $13 million or a longer contract (not sure that's a good thing, but they could).

I wouldn't be surprised if Alex Wood would play himself into QO territory. He's been awfully good but has been shuffled around because LA has such a big group of proven, veteran lefties.

Over the last three years Wood has posted:

364 1/3 innings, 3.29 ERA, 1.15 WHIP, 3.39 FIP, 122 ERA+, 3.59 K/BB

Kind of wish the Brewers would have gotten in on him.

Despite all of the attention surrounding the Sonny Gray acquisition I expect Alex Wood to be their most meaningful addition for this upcoming season.

Not just “at Night” anymore.
