Dallas Keuchel

I'm not opposed to signing Keuchel, but at some point you just have to let the young guys pitch.

You never know how long the young guys will be effective, so might as well use those useful innings that Woodruff, Burnes, and Peralta will provide while they have league minimum salaries.

I am all for giving the young guns a shot but I am also not against having them get a shot with some extra depth. I'd rather the young guys be looked upon as depth than hope for similar seasons to last year. I'd rather have too many players/pitchers than wish we could have had one more.

That BrettBuck dude on twitter says Dallas would like to come to MKE but financials don’t add up.
dallas keuchel “seems out of reach” but #Brewers still trying to negotiate with Boras. Dallas said he wants to come to milwaukee but it seems financially it will be a struggle

Lets hope the friendship between Mark and Scott can work out something

Another one year deal?

If DS gets Dallas to sign a one-year deal you might as well just put him in the HOF the next day.

I know it is WAY too early to speculate on this, but who do we think would be the top candidates to be available at the deadline this year? I'll start with some of the names that have already been thrown out here in recent months:

Mad Bum

Michael Fulmer

Marcus Stroman

Again - we have no idea at this stage if we'll even be in contention come the end of July, nevertheless who all of the sellers will be at this stage. But, just looking at those teams that we can feel pretty confident will have losing seasons this year - are there any other SP's that could be worth keeping our eye on during the 1st half of this season?

Well, just looking at the list of projected bad teams' veteran starters:

Orioles: Dylan Bundy, Alex Cobb, Andrew Cashner

Marlins: Jose Urena, Dan Straily

Tigers: Michael Fulmer, Jordan Zimmermann, Tyson Ross, Matt Moore

White Sox: Carlos Rodon, Ivan Nova, Ervin Santana

Royals: Danny Duffy, Ian Kennedy

Mariners: Felix Hernandez, Mike Leake

Rangers: Lance Lynn, Mike Minor, Shelby Miller, Drew Smyly, Edinson Volquez

Giants: MadBum, Jeff Samardzija, Derek Holland, Drew Pomeranz

Blue Jays: Stroman, Clayton Richard, Aaron Sanchez

Diamondbacks: Greinke, Robby Ray, Zach Godley

Now obviously some of these guys are going to suck, and some of these teams may be better than expected. But of all those guys, the ones that intrigue me would be Cobb, Urena, Fulmer, Zimmermann, Rodon, Pomeranz, Sanchez and Robby Ray. King Felix would be fun from a fan perspective, but who knows if he has anything left in the tank?

The issue in all of this is that before every season and trade deadline I am barely interested in any of these guys for the cost. We hear the line, "let's make a move at the deadline" but honestly I wouldn't put in a winning bid for any of these guys given that I'll be bidding against 4-5 other teams at least.

Obviously we'll settle on a value guy like Gio was or some team will cave and just give us someone like Stroman for a very small return.

That said, almost none of those guys interest me assuming we are getting near the playoffs with the same core. Why would I give up 6 years of a valuable prospect for Stroman? What if I could just pitch a bullpen game and pitch likely better than what Stroman could give me?

That's why, if this was truly available and Mark would be willing to pay...I'd take Keuchel for 1-2, maybe 3 years. Keuchel doesn't really move the needle for me that much but none of those guys do other than maybe Ray. So keep the prospects and get the pitcher anyways that can help us for the full season. We're going to need it this year. A slow start and we may be cooked given the competition level.

Still think Rodon would be a great under the radar guy and has years of control. If/when he has a fully healthy season he'll be untouchable or cost too much to acquire. Hard throwing lefty with years of control, get him away from an idiot manager running him out for 110+ pitches and he could be exactly what we're looking for.

Yeah, Robbie Ray is the one guy on there who seems like the borderline-premium acquisition that Stearns and company save good offers for. Barring that, they will be bargain shopping as usual. I'm not convinced that the D-Backs are going to be terrible though.

Keuchel and Grandal both rejected qualifying offers, so the Brewers would forfeit their 4th pick in the draft for Keuchel, having already forfeited their 3rd pick for Grandal. I'm pretty sure the Round A pick they gave up for Claudio was immune from being forfeited anyway, meaning their 3rd-round pick is the pick they lose even though it was technically their 4th pick before the Claudio trade.

Not sure how I feel about Keuchel in the grand scheme of things, but I'd be happy in the short-term if they got him at a reasonable price.

Exactly why you aren't going to get some bargain now. Why would the White Sox do that? They don't want to rebuild.

The crazy thing with all of this is - have there been any substantive reports on which teams might be in on Keuchel? I know there was that Braves blogger guy 3-4 weeks who came out and said that the Braves and Brewers were two teams in, but I don't think we've heard anything more credible than that, have we? Are the Phillies waiting to get a deal done with Harper before they turn their attention to Keuchel/Kimbrel, or what's the market for Keuchel right now? I just find it very odd that we are getting close to March now, and there's hardly been any rumors out there on teams potentially interested in this guy.
