TURBO

Yes, Bryant's beef might also be with the MLBPA, but he's raising service time manipulation as a way that teams suppress player earnings and contract freedom.

MLB is full of guys who are earning less and being tied to their clubs longer than they would otherwise be, if front offices didn't hold them back.

If nothing else, his case will draw further attention to the issue to be used in the next CBA.

This should serve as a reminder to anyone who attends any work function, Christmas party, company picnic, drinks with colleagues, etc. Behavior matters. I'm really surprised that they fired him. I thought it would be a suspension with mandatory training or some other lesser punishment.

Saturday night he's celebrating a pennant and by Thursday afternoon he's gone. No matter how irreplaceable we think we are, we're not.

Have we learned nothing from professional sports over the last few years? Everyone will put on a sad face and say they are sorry or outraged or whatever else and move on and forget about it in a few weeks. Maybe this guy never gets a GM job but I doubt this is going to keep him out of front office jobs.

Well it's now kept him out of the job he had.

I hope Stearns isn't as socially clueless as some of these Astros guys and it didn't rub off him:

Astros GM Jeff Luhnow was asked whether he had personally reached out to @stephapstein to apologize.

Luhnow said he’s been busy and hasn’t had the time.

Stephanie was sitting in the room.

Rays' Bloom to the Red Sox. Good move by Boston.

Yeah this guy is not Antonio Brown. He's a suit, there are 100k of him waiting in the wings for his job and most of them not as tone deaf.

Most likely drunk and thought it was a great time for a sweet dude bro joke.

He also used to work on Wall Street. Arrogance and tone-deafness run rampant there.

Latest Statement from the Astros:

EHq7GlEX4AAuc4F?format=jpg&name=small

This is so ridiculous that it is almost comical. Yes, comical even when considering the serious nature of the subject.

So they can fire this guy for making comments that are interpreted to support domestic violence, and as a result offended a few individuals it was directed at. You lose your job for that. OK, fine.

Yet the same organization has no problem in trading for, paying 6.5 million per year, and putting in the middle of the playing field to show him off to the entire world during the World Series, a guy who escaped an assault charge against a woman only because she went to Mexico and would not return to Canada for a trial.

So here the word and implication is deemed by the Astros to be worse than the actual act of violence.

How can the Astros release a statement that actually says "his conduct does not reflect the values of our organization" while continuing to employ Roberto Osuna? There is absolutely zero justification for this.

And for those who will state that we really don't know what Osuna did and "trial by media" becomes more and more of a threat to an individual's rights and freedoms...I will be the first to agree with that statement. However, the Astros are part of MLB, and MLB suspended Osuna for 75 games and Osuna (and the MLBPA) did not fight the suspension. So the organization the Astros are a part of have already determined guilt, so again it is complete hypocrisy that the Astros can release a statement saying "We fully support MLB and baseball's stance and values regarding domestic violence" while employing Robert Osuna.

That statement from the Astros is the most arrogant and hollow thing I've read in a long time. They are more than happy to employ a woman abuser because he can help them win games and make them more money. But a guy who says the wrong thing...well he's a front office guy so we will throw him to the wolves and then strut around and make like we "do the right thing." Reporters should be all over the Astros for this, and I mean all over the Astros, but in all honesty I think most sports reporters are so darn dumb these days they will praise the fact that Taubman is out and not see anything past that. I certainly hope that I am wrong and the Astros start taking a real beating for continuing to employ Osuna after this ridiculous statement.

Go Nationals!!!

So your team just achieved a key milestone on the way to the championship, beat the big bad Yankees, looks like maybe a team for the ages. It's a huge deal. So, how do you choose to celebrate? Says a lot about the guy that he made the choice he did, that his joy at the moment was not complete without taking time out for some toxic harassment of a woman.

It does, however, seem like the rot runs much deeper, and the stories are starting to come out about the culture of the organization. I don't think this is over.

See, for example:

How demoralizing it must be to be a player on that team right now...

That espn article is a fantastic read ( wow did I just say that?)

In every conceivable way, the astros screwed this up. Every opportunity to make a decision, they screwed up, except probably fiiring Taubman.

Ill be surprised if he ever works in baseball again. This was a systemic failure, but he's the sacrificial example.

Brewers bullpen coach Steve Karsay apparently in the mix for the Yankees pitching coach position according to Mark Feinsand...

@feinsand: Interesting name to watch in Yankees' pitching coach search: Steve Karsay. Current Brewers bullpen coach, former NYY pitcher; was Indians' Triple-A PC from 2016-18 and a PC in Cleveland's system for seven years overall. Popular with young pitchers, big proponent of analytics.
Not just “at Night” anymore.

One interesting note is MLB proposed a deadline for multi-year deals for free agents for at the conclusion of the Winter Meetings in hopes of speeding up the free agency process for bigger name free agents, but the MLBPA has declined the proposal. I like the idea of implementing this and hope that it is something that can be worked out in the next CBA.

It makes sense why they declined it. If you put in a hard deadline for that it can only favor the teams. Just lowball them till the deadline where they have to accept or get stuck with only a 1 year deal.
Remember what Yoda said:

  • 2 weeks later...

Astros stole signs electronically in 2017. Mike Fiers among others admitted that the Astros were stealing signs. “That's not playing the game the right way. They were advanced and willing to go above and beyond to win“.

The culture around the Astros is absolutely pathetic. What a sad time to be an Astros fan. That entire franchise is just a mess. For me at least, it’s crazy how fast an organization can go from being one you could pull for to being one you despise. They could lose 100 games a season the rest of my life and I would laugh. What a shame for anyone to be associated with that organization in any way.

Sterns came from there, so not surprising we’re one of a few teams linked to doing similar stuff.

*RollieTime Logs Out*

*RollieTime Laughs :laughing *

We will see if anything happens with that. I figured the Brewers would be linked to this because Stearns came from the Astros. I recall La Russa accusing us of cheating with the lighting system in Miller Park in the past. I believe in 2011? This could be another attempt at the Cardinals trying to start something.

Also, If Fiers came out and said how the Astros were stealing signs and that was on a championship team, I see no reason why he wouldn’t continue on and mention us if there was any merit to it. Since he hasn’t mentioned any type of culture like that was present in Milwaukee, I don’t think the Brewers were doing it.

Obviously every team is trying to pick up on guys tipping pitches and whatnot. That’s not a big deal. The big issue is using electronics and stealing signs in other means like that and relaying information to the hitter while he is batting.
