2019 Brewers' pitching staff

The Brewers will probably go with Peralta in the rotation and Woodruff in the pen, but I would like to see one of them in the AAA rotation to stay stretched out as a starter to replace the first guy who gets injured. I guess Nelson's timetable will probably play a role as to whether or not this might be important. If they think he'll be ready a couple of weeks into the season, it wouldn't be as important to have a good "insurance policy" ready in AAA.

I am torn on Woodruff. I'd like to see him get a chance to start, but it is nice that we have so much excess pitching talent that a guy with his potential may not be able to make the cut. For much of the Brewers' existence he would be slated as our #1 or #2 at this point. Essentially, if he's in the pen it's because he fell behind Burnes and Peralta on the depth charts.

I agree with you on Peralta in the rotation and Woodruff to the pen. Disagree that either in AAA To get stretched out, we don’t have that luxury, not with our daunting schedule to begin the year we’re going to need all of our bullets. Tomlin in AAA as filler til Nelson.

Tomlin likely has an early opt-out if not in the majors, so they may not have that luxury. Not that he'd be a huge loss if that happens, but it would affect overall depth.

Is there anybody else concerned about our bullpen besides me? No jj for who knows how long, I zero faith in Albers. Same with barnes if he makes the team. Williams meh. Houser meh. Now I read on fan blog site Petricka should stick. Keep hearing how our bullpen should still be a strength, I don’t see it, at least not starting out the year when we need our bullpen at its best because of our early season schedule.

Even without JJ the bullpen is still a major strength. We have Hader, Knebel, Claudio, Woodruff and Guerra who in previous years would all be the clear cut #1 guy. Williams and Barnes would be #2/#3 people on many bullpens and they are our 5th/6th/7th best guy. Houser would normally be treated as a top tier RP prospect had we not been so flush with RP pitching prospects in the past (like Knebel and Hader). I agree on Albers, but as the last guy on the list, that's normal to have a sunk contract you are hoping rebound.

This is far and away the best brewers bullpen we've ever had and arguably the best in the league. To have 5 or 6 guys (when JJ is healthy) who can strongly handle the 8th or 9th inning and likely all be able to go more than 1 inning at at time is absolutely fantastic.

Love Knebel,Hader,Guerra. Like Claudio. Not so sure we know Woody gonna be in pen, I’d feel better with him there. With-out any outside additions(Kimbrel,Gio) our pen to open the year not nearly as strong as last years playoff pen. Now maybe it will be as the season progresses but still worried about the early season schedule. No team in baseball won more games last year because of their pen than the brewers. Ugh.

because tomlin finished the 2018 season on a 40-man roster and has at least six years of mlb service time, he qualifies for these retention bonus considerations.

in a nutshell, the brewers could delay a decision on tomlin as late as 1 june if he accepts a $100,000 retention bonus. otherwise, he can be released by the brewers before the end of spring training--allowing him to sign with any club.

There is no way Tomlin gets a spot. If someone swoops in and we can't send him to AAA all the power to them. Why would we give a spot to someone who has sucked for nearly 1,000 innings and is 34? Not like he is proving much in ST so far. It is like considering Jeff Suppan for the rotation.

Couldn't agree more. I hope he's just a motivator for the young guys.

Also Woodruff is doing his best to try and make CC's decision difficult. 6 up, 6 down, 5 k's so far today.

Not sure how they can not give Woodruff a spot if this keeps up

TH tweet

Brandon Woodruff doing all you can do to win spot in #Brewers rotation. His line today: 5 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 7 K. In three Cactus League outings, has nine scoreless innings, allowing three hits with 12 strikeouts.

Apparently was hitting 95-97 on the gun too

Sounds like the Wade Miley talk from last year.

but it's not like every guy suddenly forgot every piece of advice he gave

So Chacin, Anderson, Davies, Woodruff, & Burnes/Peralta?

No idea what brewers are thinking, but this is what I’d do:

Chacin

Anderson

Davies

Peralta

Woodruff

Burnes to pen- woody possible ace in the making stays in rotation.pen with-out jeffress short high-leverage arm so Burnes to pen

I don’t know what there gonna do when Nelson’s ready?

Rotate the 3 young guns to bullpen-rotation manage innings?

Good depth for the inevitable injury or two.

I would drop Tomlin and send Peralta to triple a. Just because miley did well last year doesn't mean we have to press our luck and Peralta is just the least polished of the 3.

Agree less polished, gonna be tough seeing him strike out 10 AAA batters in 5 or 6 innings though.

Chacin

Anderson

Davies

Burnes

Woodruff

Peralta either to AAA and keep him stretched out as a starter, OR he is our long relief ace.

Looking at our three young guns for the rotation, something to obviously consider would be their innings limits.

Most innings thrown in career then add the 25.

Woodruff- 158 > 183

Burnes- 145.2 > 170.2

peralta- 144.1 .>169.1

Barring injury, what should the brewers plan be to keep these guys from blowing past their max innings? Reg season & possible playoffs?

Skip starts? 6 man rotation? Bullpen? Minors? Piggybacking?

What about Nelson when he gets back?

Probably a mix of those. Not straight piggybacking where you have guys scheduled to relieve the starters, but it'll be based more on matchups. And probably not till September with expanded rosters.

I just hope that these guys pitch well enough to warrant limiting their innings at the end of the year.

I think you put the best 5 out there to start the season and worry about this later. Last year only one pitcher on the brewers staff had over 160 IP's. Stuff like this has a way of working things out. It's unlikely all three would be in the rotation all year long (would be awesome if that would happen), so there will be opportunity for some spot starts to give guys rest.

Counsell saying Peralta and Burnes each adding 2 mph to their FB and woody commanding his 97 has got me thinking the following:

- We have 3 potential ace’s in the making

- All 3 should start the year with big club

- All 3 should get there innings as close to the max as possible so next year no restrictions

- Stearns & co even better talent evaluators than i thought

-Barring injury, not going to be held hostage at the trade deadline because we need top of the rotation starter

- Brewers minor league pitching development vastly improved

Anybody else out there as excited as I am, and not just this year but for the future as well?

With Burnes, Peralta and Woodruff all being stretched out as starters,I believe that’s what they will be doing. Not that it can’t change. Just seems to be the best use of those guys. I’m unsure if all three crack the mlb rotation, but length is important.
