2019 Brewers' pitching staff

adambr2
I find the pining for Derek Johnson interesting. He couldn’t do anything with Garza who was actually decent before DJ arrived. Ditto, Wily Peralta, Taylor Jungmann and Michael Blazek. If he’s going to get all the credit for having good pitching staffs in 2017, 2018 and 2019 you should also heap the blame on him for failing to get more out of Garza and top rated prospects Wily Peralta and Taylor Jungmann.

Or maybe those guys simply weren’t any good and an MLB coach has a limited impact on a player’s success or failure. .

None of those guys is exactly Cy Young. DJ did a great job here and he is doing a great job in Cinn while several of the same pitchers here are regressing. I don’t know Hooks skill set so I certainly can’t say he is bad at his job, I just know a pitching staff that no one would mistake for 90s Braves made it to the NLCS.

I know a lot of people have been comparing the Reds this season to the Reds last season and attributing a lot of the improvement to DJ. I think he is part of it but I'm not so sure it's as big a part of it as it seems.

The Reds made it a priority to improve the staff in the offseason. They did so by adding three starters. (though one hasn't pitched yet due to injury.) Beyond that one injury all their starters have made at least 18 starts. So, one injury to speak of for the entire starting rotation. They also has some young guys pitching before they were ready last season and are starting to figure it out now. I'm sure DJ has helped with that but to say they wouldn't have improved without him is a stretch. See Brandon Woodruff for example. Their bullpen overall has been like so many are. A couple guys having a better year this year and a couple having a worse year. That is the same across all of baseball year in and year out. So I don't knowif DJ should get any credit or blame for a single year when it comes to relievers.

I'm not trying to belittle how good DJ is. I would love it if he was still here. I just don't think he's the major reason for the Reds turnaround. It was an organizational goal to improve the pitching and the players they picked to get there seem to be the right ones.

There needs to be a King Thames version of the bible.

Not encouraged by what CC said regarding Chacín. Instead of saying, we’ll have to have a talk about Chacín staying in the rotation, he said he just needs to pitch better. What’s the definition of insanity?

Why not put Supek in the rotation? He certainly will pitch better than the gas can Chacín.

Why not call up D Williams?. he’s hardly given up a baserunner all month. The scouts think he’s ready.

Patience is a virtue.

He who hesitates loses.

I think it’s been the latter all year with this team. Frustrating.

It has to be a balance with making these decision. Brew Crew 92: just imagine if you were running the show. Just think of how many players you would have burned through already as you make your way down our minor leagues. You have a new flavor every day. It just doesn’t work that way. You can’t just burn people off the 40-man roster all the time with no consequences. There is a reason that no GM operates this way and it comes down to depth and money.

It’s been the wrong depth all year. Depth isn’t depth if it’s bad depth.

CC isn't going to throw one of his players under the bus to the media. Let's see what he and Stearns do.

That is one thing I agree with Brew Crew 92. The Brewers have some bad depth right now, guys like Williams and Grisham will have to be added soon but hopefully there is more quality depth next year on the back end of the 40 man.

I think we can agree that there MIGHT be some younger players that could be added that have shown they have some promising talent. But they’re also unproven as can be. I mean Brew Crew 92 was jumping guys on our team earlier this year that never pitched AA ball before. It’s just not realistic. It’s great that we have some young arms that look promising but they’re really unknown right now. If things continue they’ll probably get a look.

Wait. You can’t run a MLB club like a video game? Having unlimited resources? My mind has been blown.

Haven't we waived like 6 guys this year? And all of them have gone unclaimed? And some of them are back on the 40 man now (Jackson)?

That isn't to say that I'm advocating for recklessness, but it's not like the last 5 to 8 guys on the 40 man are hot commodities that we need to be super careful with--especially since we are getting closer to September. Bring a guy like Supak up in August and we likely wouldn't even need to burn his option this year. I don't know if he is ready or not, but it always seems like pitchers we bring up start off really hot (Peralta, Suter, even Jungmann). It's also not like the 4th and 5th starter slots are anywhere close to being nailed down.

Another way to look at the current pitching staff... Remember last season when the Brewer Brass seemingly had the difficult task of deciding which pitchers to keep off the post season rosters? This season just think how difficult will it be to decide which pitchers to place on the postseason roster. What a difference a few months makes!

According to Brooks Baseball Freddy Peralta touched 98-mph for the first time in his MLB career (98.41 mph) versus the Braves and hit 97.82 mph last night. His max velocities in outings as a starter earlier this year fluctuated between 94 to 96 mph.
Not just “at Night” anymore.

Even with the injury to Woodruff, the pitching staff is showing signs of improvement moving forward. The bullpen is moving closer to elite status with Houser and Peralta’s confident dominance to go with Hader’s. So we need 4 more quality arms, 2 of which need to be late inning, 8th/9th. Can we get 3 from among Nelson Burnes Jeffress Guerra D Williams? I believe we can. So that leaves Stearns needing to go out and get 1 high leverage pen arm to give us an elite pen.

The rotation is short 2 arms? If you believe in Chacín, one. I believe Stearns should add a #2/3 type arm(Ray Stroman) at a min. Personally, I’d like to see Greinke added, but Attanasio might object. Also Bauer, but the tribe could extort to the extreme, and just keep him till the offseason. So we’ll get one of em, and I’d like to see Supak replace Chacin, whose shoes are small enough to fill, imo, quite easily.

If Stearns can get 2 pen arms, that would potentially give us the most dominant pen in the NL. And potentially, depending on how Nelson and Burnes do, to have it be strong enough to drop Claudio and Albers and Guerra for the playoffs.

It’s not just you specifically,

But I don’t understand the Bauer is going to be traded crowd. The Indians are light years better than us. I get that they’re in a crowded AL picture but the twins have a far better chance of folding than succeeding.

Madthinker88, massive tribe expert, gave us a understanding of the tribes thinking in the deadline thread. So if he’s right, it’s looking like they’d sell Bauer IF there price is met, hence my comments in my post regarding Bauer.

There was some talk about Chase Anderson's team option(s) in the GDT which prompted a question of mine, moving it here:

Chase will be just short of 6 years of service time at the end of the season, and so would still be arbitration eligible if the team option wasn't picked up, wouldn't he? Unless there was a provision in there (like Eric Thames has) that he couldn't be tendered a contract, so does anyone know if there is? Mind you this is just out of curiousity, I don't think there'd be much of a saving to do that, nor would it be particularly wise in regards to negotiating similar extensions in the future.

Interesting. If he finishes strong his arby number might be above his option number anyway so they'd execute the option. If he flounders in the last couple of months I don't think it'll be picked up (depending on the buyout. Cots is down right now).

Spotrac says $500k buyout.

From 2016 through now there have been 100 pitchers who have thrown at least 400 innings.

Over that time Chase's FIP- of 108 ranks 81st (in the same neighborhood as Clayton Richard, Anibal Sanchez, Marco Estrada), while his ERA- of 88 ranks 31st (in the same neighborhood as Patrick Corbin, James Paxton, Jake Arrieta).

His ERA of 3.74 has outpaced his FIP of 4.59 by 0.85 runs, the largest margin in the sample. For whatever reasons certain pitchers are able to consistently outperform their peripherals & I think the sample is large enough that Chase has shown he is one of those guys.

Most of this appears to be the result of him allowing a .298 wOBA with runners on base (in the same neighborhood as Gerritt Cole, MadBum, Carlos Carrasco) compared to a .325 wOBA with the bases empty (in the same neighborhood as Jason Vargas, Trevor Cahill, Dan Straily).

If he's healthy the option seems like a no brainer.
