2019 Brewers' pitching staff

I love that the team isn't afraid to go with Freddy, Burnes and Woodruff. I'm a bit surprised - thinking they'd stay with Anderson and put one of those three in the pen. But that's fine.

I expect some ups and downs with the young guys, but in the long run, we'll be better for it.

The injuries to Jeffress and Knebel are disheartening, but it happens. Let's get through things and hopefully both those guys come back this year and are effective.

Discomfort is not pain. I have discomfort in my foot right now, it isn't sore at all.

Seriously? I'm not quibbling with any other point right now, but this one is really going the extra step.

What exactly is "discomfort" in your throwing elbow when you're a pitcher if not pain? It's not comparable to you having sore feet.

Have you experienced pain vs discomfort? I’ve been amazingly healthy, but have had a knot in my back for the last 3 weeks. It was never painful, but it was just there. There’s a difference

Beyond that, remember that Knebel had a damaged UCL when we acquired him. I believe PRP and rehab were able to Macguyver his arm together, but it was always sort of expected the ligament might have further deteriorating

This year's pitching staff is even more equipped to supplement SHORTER outings from initial out getters. Not sure why people think the average outing is going to be longer in '19 than it was last year. This years OD bullpen is going to include two long-time MLB starters (Anderson, Guerra) with Jimmy Nelson waiting in the wings. Last years bullpen began with nothing but short-stint relievers. The 2018 OD roster had only 11 pitchers with 5 stretched as starters: Anderson, Chacin, Davies, Suter, Woodruff and 6 conditioned to relieve: Albers, Barnes, Drake, Hader, Jeffress, Knebel.

From day one, the Brewers are better equipped to cover MORE innings from the pen.

Totally I agree with your take here. In my perfect brewer bullpen world I’d want 3 high quality Multi-inning(2-4)pen arms. Example > Guerra vs dodgers game 4. What a weapon. Protect the pen, hold the enemy at bay, Protect The lead. Maybe that third piece could be Nelson. Or houser, or brown or Webb perdomo Rasmussen whoever steps up.

Not that the order means a heck of a lot, but Freddy as the #2 starter as a 22-year-old is pretty dang cool. He's dominated this spring, though, so it's deserved. I'm really excited about this rotation, especially if/when Nelson joins it.

I have three questions.

Am I the only one that thinks Brandon Woodruff looks like Jimmy Nelson when he pitches?

Who has the most upside of our three young guns?

Am I the only one that thinks Freddy is going to throw a no-hitter at some point in the future?

1. No, i think Woodruff and Nelson have a lot of similarities. Nelson has better breaking stuff and is more consistent (before the injury anyway), but he was older too. I think Woodruff breaks out in a big way.

2. Personally I love all three. I'd say Peralta has the highest ceiling, but also the lowest floor. Burnes I think is going to be a consistent #2-3 starter type.

3. That wouldn't surprise me. When he's on, it's tough to square up on him.

This is so fun seeing the youth! We even have Zack Brown waiting in the wings to potentially help out this year too. Can’t recall a time in our franchises history that we have this quality of talent, youth, depth...especially for pitching. Exciting times in Brewers history!

I'm not sure why we want both Woodruff and Burnes in the rotation and Andersen in the pen..... Our pen is in total pain and dire need. No Knebel, Jeffress, Woodruff, Burnes, or Soria from last year. I'm not sure a rival manager could have dismantled our strength in a better way, outside of losing Hader. Hopefully, both Jeffress and Knebel can be back midstream and our new guys can help out. Yet, it would put my mind at ease with Burnes or Woodruff in the pen for the time being,

Agree with dire need. Dire need of a high leverage arm or two. Counsell said “it’s time” for young guns to start. Let’s see how long it stays that way if no Kimbrel and or no outside help(trade).

Did I hear somewhere that Peralta's velocity was up this spring? That was the thing that concerned me about his repertoire. Hard to fool guys with a deceptive delivery long term without a little juice to back you up.

With his ridiculous extension, his release point was already 2 feet closer to home plate than average, making the 92 on the gun, the equivalent of 95. If he's now throwing 95, the equivalent is let's just say "scary".

Scary is right. Did you see the looks on Rockies hitters on m day. Blackman/Arenado priceless. Now add 2 mph. Silly

So if we have a lead after 6 innings what is everyone's game plan to finish the game? Or rather what pitchers are in line for those roles? I would guess Hader, Claudio, and then I'm not really sure

I would put Alex Wilson in that group. Possibly Taylor Williams, but I’m a little leery about him. He would probably be a guy to come in to put the fire out in the 6th for the starter and hopefully get through the 7th unscathed to get it to the backend guys like Hader, Claudio, and Wilson. Once Fields is up, I think he will be a backend guy as well.

I may have missed that, but we should know today since he is pitching at Salt River Fields which is the AZ Spring Training park with publicly available data including pitch velocity and movement. The outing details should be on Brooks Baseball baseball by tonight or tomorrow.

Not just “at Night” anymore.

Thanks for the heads up!

I'm a big fan of Taylor Williams and would hope he can be the late inning reliever we need. He got absolutely destroyed by lefties last year (1057 OPS), but was dominant vs RH's (567 OPS). Hopefully that's a small sample issue and not a trend. He wont be able to last long in that role with splits like that.

I think Williams could be one of the key bullpen pieces this season as to how successful the Brewers will be at slamming the door in the later innings. Williams is a breakout candidate in the bullpen that could be huge for us if Knebel is unable to get back on the field this season.

Fields feels like he could be a disaster. Big fly ball ratio, shoulder injuries cost him the couple months last season.

I'd feel better with guys like Williams, Houser, Guerra than Fields.

If Williams controls his wildness he could be real threat out of the bullpen.

I think he's a really nice breakout candidate. He missed two years, came back last year, earned a role on the team, though was up and down. But his command should be coming back now that he's finally got a healthy off-season to train and a full ST'ing.

Also, still holding out hope for Jacob Barnes. He's got the stuff to be dominant.

Still, really concerning that we went from looking at Jeffress, Knebel, and Wahl to finish up games to having names like Claudio, Wilson and Fields being tossed around.

Well, I'd just take 2018 1st half Taylor Williams vs. 2018 2nd half Taylor Williams. The former version could do little wrong. The more recent version did less and less right to the point where he could hardly get through an outing without getting into major trouble.
