2019 Brewers' pitching staff

I think in 2019, Nelson takes the Smoltz path, and closes/relieves for a bit. A good way to get him back in the swing of things...

In all my despair about Knebel and excitement about the young rotation I forgot all about Nelson for a couple of hours. :) That may indeed be a good option this season but I'll bet he is itching to get back in the rotation.

Yeah, but Nelson very much a team guy.

Which is clearly starting out in the minors to get back in the rotation. The thought I have on it is that the Club instead is giving him the opportunity to play at the ML level immediately. What is that itch? to Start? or play in the Majors?

To start, he has been a starter his whole career and has talked recently about wanting to be the opening day starter. He is 2 years from free agency, if ready I am sure his preference would be to get back in the rotation and we can make room for him. But I am sure he would go to the bullpen if asked and especially if as you say it is a way to keep him in the majors earlier.

I'm pretty excited that they are keeping Freddy in the rotation to start the year. I don't know how well Anderson will adjust to the pen. Hopefully he keeps a positive attitude and finds ways to help this team. I know he was not thrilled with being removed from the rotation last year, I would imagine if he's a competitive guy, this won't sit well with him either. Finding a way for him to give us positive innings will be big depending on how long we are without Jeffress and Knebel.

Anderson is another team first guy. I think he’s going to take to the bullpen like the proverbial fish to water. Uptick in velocity out of the pen certainly won’t hurt, he’s got good stuff he should do really well.

Do we have any non team first guys?

Chacin

Woodruff

Burnes

Peralta

Davies

Strong rotation!

I do NOT like Davies in the rotation. Would rather he was AAA fodder to start the season.

However, Davies in the bullpen is a lot worse than Anderson in the bullpen, so I understand the reasoning.

If Nelson is able to come back, and all 3 youngsters deliver, this rotation is awesome.

Just as I never believe initial injury reports, I also never believe any "team first" stuff. Some players are very good at PR, some are not. Anderson could be (probably is) a team first guy, but for all we know he hates the idea of going to the pen.

Well ... that's on him. It's better than not having a job. Pitch better.

You must not of heard many interviews with chase, he’s awesome, smart, well spoken, and also a stand-up guy. When they asked him about not making the postseason roster, he said he was naturally disappointed, but understood the teams decision. No reason to be skeptical with chase’s Motives.

Chase Anderson is a decent but not great player. He doesn't really do himself any favors by whining about not making a roster or moving to a bullpen role. Falling in line can be the difference between playing until 39 and playing until 33 for guys like that. I think that's what FV is getting at.

What’s going on with the Chase bashing? When has he complained about anything? You don’t know what your talking about. Stop.

He didn't say he was complaining. He said it would be counterproductive for him to complain, regardless of how he really feels.

I guess you could read it that way. I don’t understand the blame chase game here. Some of us are acting like he’s this scub pitcher and a potential bad apple. Polar opposite of bad apple and he’s a good above average pitcher.

I like Chase and personally I like him better than Davies. I like that we are ready to move forward with the young guys in the rotation and think all of Burnes, Peralta and Woodruff are worth taking a chance on right now.

Between Davies and Anderson I personally think Anderson is probably potentially a more useful pen asset than Davies and I wonder if that played into the decision at all.

Will never understand people constantly bashing Chase Anderson just like I never understand why people despised Rickie Weeks.

Chase Anderson is a solid pitcher and you could argue he was set up for failure fighting for a rotation spot with a new delivery. Pretty much assured he will start 10+ games this year due to injuries. Heck wouldn’t shock me if a young guy struggles so bad Anderson takes their spot.

I think people are going to be massively disappointed in those young guys. Many were successful because of short stints. Going 6+ is a whole new ballgame and I am not too confident all three will make that transition seamlessly.

Davies or Anderson...meh. Probably Davies after Anderson’s spring. I find them to be comparable though...Davies with some higher upside.

Yea, sorry, didnt mean to bash Anderson. Just my own issue, whenever I hear team first guy I think of other terms like scrappy guy, veteran presence, etc. Just empty phrases.

Anderson may be the best guy a coach could ever have. He could be a jerk behind the scenes. We dont know, so why worry about. I do know players who were seen publicly as team guys, and were kerks in the clubhouse.

Either way, hes sent to the bullpen and smart enough not to make a stink about it publicly.

They won't be asked to go 6+ very often so I don't think it's all that big of a deal. That said, I also wouldn't be shocked if one of them struggled. That's pretty natural for young pitchers. But they have to get a shot for us to know who is capable.

There needs to be a King Thames version of the bible.

Disagree with your take on our young guns. Seamless no. There will be growing pains, I think we all know this, but these 3 are gonna be studs this year. Woody is slightly ahead of the other two because of experience. He’s ace material THIS year. Burnes also potential ace but maybe not this year. I think, like woody can pitch deep cause of his good command.peralta once he commands his FB could be the best of the bunch. But without the command right now will struggle to go deep.
