Maybe I'm just depressed, but right now with those two probably hurt I kinda feel getting Kimbrel is DEFCON 1 if this is still a "go for it" thing.

I'm kinda thinking they stand pat. I feel like a deal would have been done before the news broke if it were gonna get done. Maybe I'm wrong but I'm not feeling Kimbrel.

I think it's more likely we make a small trade or pick up somebody else that was cut than sign Kimbrel. I just can't see us spending any more right now. It would certainly be fun if I was wrong, that's my hunch anyways.

This is what I think is actually going to happen. They won't sign him but will acquire some kind of value fill-in guy and he'll end up contributing way more than people are anticipating. A Jesse Chavez type thing.

It may have already happened. The Josh Fields signing was announced Tuesday. The more I look at the timeline of how this has all played out, the more it makes me kinda nauseous.

May depend on how they feel about Jeffress. I think they kicked the tires on Kimbrel as a "it won't hurt to see" type of discussion that got blown up. However, if Jeffress is really broken then Kimbrell may be more serious.

I can't help by feel a little duped here. It got out that Knebel hadn't pitched in awhile, but there was "no pain". That was obviously a lie. The fact that the lie may just have coincided with the time that they were in negotiations with Kimbrel kinda makes it worse in my opinion. I'm hoping it is much ado about nothing, but I'm certainly going to be much more cautious trusting what these guys say about player health. That's what I get for being optimistic I suppose.

I’m sorry guys but they NEED to sign Kimbrel. Small trades, waiver claims and such not gonna be enough in my opinion. Barnes Williams Petricka Albers not closers. Fields prob not. Nelson our secret weapon. He could close today if we don’t sign kimbrel.

This was the final straw for you?

I mean, I've never trusted what anyone says about player health.

I don't think they NEED Kimbrel. I do think signing him is a much safer bet than not. But there's a waiver fodder out there that can compensate for the loss of Knebel. Even crappy Brewers teams have had a knack for that. Kimbrel is basically professional roof replacement and another option is trying to do it yourself. Possible, but a lot harder.

I guess my earlier opinions didn’t litter the board with overreactions after all.

LOL, touche. I suppose this is far from the first time they've pulled this sort of stunt.

As far as "i told you so" moments go, this one sucks.

Relax, it's March. Our offense should blow plenty more games open this year than last year. For all we know, both guys could be back in the bullpen by May at which point we could be fine and look for an addition at the deadline. No reason to panic in March.

Team still has Matt Albers who has experience in the 9th, if we're so focused on Hader pitching best useful innings. Taylor Williams seems like the kind of slide in to the 9th inning role as needed. Jacob Barnes is not really a 9th inning option unless he's starting the 9th inning on his own. He allowed 48% of runners inherited to score last season. Seems in his splits if a guy is on 2b, he may as well balk him to 3b as he carries a career .958 OPS against when runner on 2nd vs .510 and .525 OPS against 1st or 3rd base respectively.

Or, you know run out Jimmy Nelson for 9th inning as needed til Jeffress returns and then stretch him back out in to a starter role while as he's in this role he's limiting his IP.

I can't remember the last time we went with three promising youngsters in our rotation, with the back end in trouble hopefully they can go longer in their starts.

I was just thinking that same thing. May see more traditional defined roles this year. Having extra starters like Anderson and Nelson ready to rock can help keep innings down for the young guys.

Very interesting it looks like they're keeping Woodruff, Peralta, and Barnes in the rotation. Any one of those guys could have been a really effective late inning reliever. Maybe they're close to signing Kimbrel, or maybe they're going to go with no closer and see if anyone steps up and grabs it. Maybe Turnbow is still out there somewhere.

Also odd that Anderson is in the BP, doesn't seem like his value is there. His value comes from when he has games where he's really on and give you 8-9 innings. Better off keeping his stretched out in AAA.

I think in 2019, Nelson takes the Smoltz path, and closes/relieves for a bit. A good way to get him back in the swing of things...

In all my despair about Knebel and excitement about the young rotation I forgot all about Nelson for a couple of hours. :) That may indeed be a good option this season but I'll bet he is itching to get back in the rotation.
