Eye Black

Per Ken Rosenthal...

Yankees progressing toward deal with free-agent reliever Zach Britton, sources tell The Athletic. Could be finalized soon.

Update from Ken Rosenthal:

Britton deal with Yankees is three years for about $40M, source tells The Athletic. NYY can exercise fourth-year option after second year. If they do not, Britton can opt out. Option would take deal beyond $50M. Opt-out details first reported by Jon Heyman and Jeff Passan.

Here's a couple lefty relievers & select 2017-18 stats...

72.8 GB% 7.27 K/9 4.50 BB/9 0.46 HR/9 3.00 ERA (69 ERA-) 3.83 FIP (86 FIP-)

64.2 GB% 5.86 K/9 1.73 BB/9 0.43 HR/9 3.33 ERA (72 ERA-) 3.16 FIP (71 FIP-)

One got 40 million bucks, one was acquired for the 39th pick in the upcoming draft.

One can afford to sign a guy to a couple guys 20+ million a season to be #4 starters or platoon starters while the other desperately needs the draft to continue to succeed. This...questionable signing doesn't make me a fan of our trade.

I was kinda hoping we'd be able to keep stacking talent while our unexpected timeline for competing had moved forward. It seems to me like we're trading away what expendable tradable assets we have for not a lot in return. Though I trust Stearns as he's given us little reason not to thus far.

I'm assuming it's Britton and Claudio. Alex isn't even arbitration eligible yet so the comparison is pretty pointless when talking about money.
