Yankees Get Tulowitzki [Latest: Announces retirement from baseball, post #11]

Tulowitzki isn't at the point in his career where he affects a Machado signing one way or the other.

This is a good fit for both player and team, because Tulowitzki can play SS everyday on a premiere team until Didi is back and then if Tulo has been good the Yankees will be able to sell high on a half season of either player. Or Tulo becomes a super utility player (or he is bad again and gets cut)

The Brewers offered a similar opportunity but he would have had to move to 2B and his offensive numbers would be less padded here.

So... no Machado in Pinstripes? (Not sure if I should put that in Blue, or not)

Machado loses some leverage in negotiations that's for sure.

"Dustin Pedroia doesn't have the strength or bat speed to hit major-league pitching consistently, and he has no power......He probably has a future as a backup infielder if he can stop rolling over to third base and shortstop." Keith Law, 2006

If I'm Machado, aside from being a jerk with a stupid face, I'd see zero change in the Yankees' leverage. If they told me Tulo means they don't need to sign me, I'd chuckle & wish them good luck.

If they wanted Machado with Gregorius already in-house before, Tulo doesn't change anything imo.

Even though he never went near a Brewer uniform, I’m sad to see Tulo go. He was always reminiscent of Griffey Jr. to me, at least in the sense that his inability to stay on the field for all his incandescent ability is so disappointing. What a phenomenal talent, and a treat to watch. Happy trails, Tulo.

Yeah, bummer for Tulo, even though it was a long time coming.

Braun still sitting atop the 2005 1st rounders with 47.2 WAR followed by Tulo (44.2), McCutchen (43.7), Zimmerman (37.8), Gordon (36.7), Upton (35.4) & Ellsbury (31.4) before dropping down to Jay Bruce at 20.4 WAR.

What's interesting to me is who ends up as the best SS of the 2010s...

Tulo | 3576 PAs | 125 wRC+ | +64 DEF | 27.8 WAR

Lindor | 2970 PAs | 120 wRC+ | +73 DEF | 25.8 WAR

Andrus | 6184 PAs | 88 wRC+ | +77 DEF | 25.7 WAR

Andrelton | 4011 PAs | 92 wRC+ | +150 DEF | 24.7 WAR

Obviously the last three still have two months to add to their tallies, but I think Lindor ultimately gets the nod. Also pretty nuts to see how far ahead of three Gold Glove quality shortstops that Andrelton's defensive metrics are.

Does Tulo get paid his 2020 salary?

From my understanding, guys that retire forfeit the remaining salary. However, he was already cut by Toronto and therefore they pretty much were paying him the dead money...and therefore he can retire and still gets paid out?

Have always been wondering how that was going to shake out. At this point, it's a three horse race between Braun, McCutchen, and Upton.

Zimmerman and Gordon will certainly get bought out of the last year of their deals and may or may not get picked up for 2020; Zimmerman likely doesn't. Upton has a ways to make up, but he's the youngest and the most productive. McCutchen was the favorite, but will he be the same player coming back from ACL surgery? It's one thing to rehab a knee injury in your 20's, it's another in your 30's. If it saps him of his speed and some power, he's an average LF at best. Braun may only have one more year to add to his number.
