Random thoughts that are pointless and too dumb to say anywhere else thread: 2019

Believe it or not, and most people do not, I have never tasted coffee, not even one sip.

It just seems like an addiction I'd rather avoid.

I'm 47 years old and, believe it or not, I've never smoked a cigarette. I can also count on two hands the number of times I have ingested any sort of alcohol in my life.

After watching one of my grandmothers pass from lung cancer due to smoking it was easy to never smoke for me.

"This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.

I don't think it's that uncommon to have never smoked. My dad smokes a pack a day and even if I wanted to try it, I could never get past the awful smell of it. As far as alcohol, I've had a sip of my dad's beer when I was like 10, thought I'd try it again to see if it was still gross when I was 21, it was and then had a rum and coke which wasn't that bad but not enough to make me want to go out and get them or make one myself.

I've never smoked weed even once in my life which seems like a rarity to me.

I don't have any real moral objection to it, I just hadn't tried it by the time I was 18, then I was in the military from 18 to 30 and in a manufacturing job since 30, both of which randomly drug test, and I have always refused to endanger my career.

I cant decide if I like McDonalds coffee or not. When I'm out it's cheap, but they tend to overroast their beans, in my opinion. What's everybody's goto coffee when they aren't at home?

I hate coffee.

It just seems like an addiction I'd rather avoid. I've seen what it does to people who can't go on another moment in life without it, so I have always stayed away.

The importance that people place on getting "their coffee" is kind of sad in so many ways.

Yea, but keep in mind most of that is people just being overly dramatic. "I need my coffee!" is more cliche than an adiction of truly NEEDING it. I drink two cups every morning more or less for decades and dont freak out without it.

Same here. I think some people have addictive personalities and could get hooked on a lot of stuff. It isn't about the exact substance as much as it is a substance they go overboard on.

There needs to be a King Thames version of the bible.

That would be like me and alcohol. My father and his extended family drank so much and messed up enough lives in the process that I decided as a teenager that I wasn't going to do that. And I was in the last group of Wisconsinites to be able to legally drink at age 18. [sarcasm]Look at all the time I've wasted.[/sarcasm]

With smoking, as a child I was surrounded by grownups who smoked and while I was never interested in following suit, I didn't realize until I left for college how much the smoke smell permeates E V E R Y T H I N G. That's when I realized my long, long history of sore throat symptoms probably wasn't a coincidence. Both of my siblings have issues with asthma, and I believe growing up amid all that smoke didn't help any of us. Even nowadays, it doesn't take much tobacco smoke to give me a sore throat or a cough.

I've been a partial season ticket holder (currently 20 games) since about 1993 (?). If Suter became a starter again next year and they offered an all Suter starts 20 game pack, I think I would consider it. (Of course, the logistics of knowing all of his starts ahead of time would be problematic)

Adopted nephew turned 11 and of course I missed his birthday. He has a record player and his father listens to electronica-type stuff. So I'm guessing his collection of music isn't too comprehensive, and at 11 maybe this is a good time to introduce him to some. I can only afford three. I'm thinking among these:

Willie Nelson--Red Headed Stranger

Black Sabbath--Paranoid (I don't recall this being hugely inappropriate for a kid, but maybe I just don't remember)

Miles Davis--either Kind of Blue or Birth of the Cool

Led Zeppelin--IV

Dolly Parton--Joline

Johnny Cash--Folsom Prison

I lean toward Sabbath, Miles Davis and Johnny Cash. Big albums from three different genres.

Why do some kickers and punters in college football wear jersey numbers in the 90s?

They get last pick?? Surely, someone on this board played college ball. Some insight?

That could be it. I'd theorize too that in college you have the issue of some numbers going to two players. So you have to be on top making sure those two kids don't play together or it's a penalty. I'd guess the most common or prone to overlapped numbers are the 20-70s because both sides use them so much. 80s are filled with WR/TEs. So, you're left with 1-19 and the 90s. They have to make sure the kicker and punter have a stand alone so everyone can play special teams with them. Just tossing out ideas.

Some big program botched this year and was penalized for it. Can't recall who, but I'm going to guess Michigan.

I think it's more, they get the leftovers. Not that they get last pick, but certain numbers have to go to certain players. Wrs and TEs 0-19 and 80s. Rbs, FBs 20-40. QB 0-19. OL 50s-70s. I don't know if Def actually has to have certain numbers or not. I can't remember off hand. But there are kind of unwritten rules about what numbers you wear, depending on position. So I just think the Kickers get left with fewer to pick from, especially if they are underclassman!

Exactly, and they can't overlap with anyone else who's going to play special teams. Defensive lineman (who normally are the 90s) are one of the rarest to play specials. Obviously all athletic people are common so anyone in the 0-50s and 80s area there. O Lines play line on FGs so 60s and 70s out.

I thought that was strictly an NFL thing? The NFL defines it clearly in their rule book.

Yes, I know the NFL is the most strict with that. I said in my original post that I think there are kind of unwritten rules with many numbers. I don't think you'd find too many OL wearing the number 14, even if they could, if that makes sense. I also think, in college and high school, that the eligible receivers need specific numbers. If they didn't have them, they'd have to report eligible on each play they were in??? Could be wrong on that.
