Random thoughts that are pointless and too dumb to say anywhere else thread: 2019

Chicago, the city, probably not the worst to live in.

Definitely one of the worst places to live. Just terrible, nothing would make me live there.

Huh? Suburbs of Chicago yes. You couldn't pay me enough to live in 95% of the suburbs.

Homer, I mean you no disrespect here. But point #4- most beautiful commute in the country...if you were trying to make me laugh, congratulations it worked.

I fly into O’Hare every year at Christmas time to visit my family in Wisconsin. Every year as we descend into the chicago area I look out the window at dreary misery as far as the eye can see. Inside my head I can hear the Talking Heads playing the song Cities. I can hear David Byrne’s voice full of angst, shouting “I wouldn’t live there IF YOU PAID ME TOOOOOO!!!”

I’ll concede that I too enjoy chicago sports radio when one of their teams has hit the skids. And chicago hot dogs are delicious. Other than that though? Definitely not for me.

I’m not even going to start on the people.

Yes, I must have missed putting suburbs on the second line.

Concrete. Woo. I mean yeah it’s a nice day out. That can happen anywhere.

Man, I am telling you. There are other places.

But if you’re happy there, I’m glad for you. I respect you as a Brewers fan and I certainly wish you nothing but happiness.

Visiting a city is very different from living in a city. I enjoy visiting NYC. I lived there (technically Hoboken, right across the river) for almost two years, and you would need to pay me a LOT of money to live in NYC. If you're visiting somewhere, then the friendliness of people is probably one of the most important things to you. When you live somewhere, there are lots of other things that factor in the equation.

Having grown up in small-town rural WI... don't get me started on the average person in small-town WI. :) Madison is about the only place I could live in WI, maybe Milwaukee.

The people of NYC used to be rude, but after 9/11 and the skyrocketing cost of housing the last 20 years they have been put in their place and are relatively pleasant now. In LA they pleasantly tell you what you want to hear while lying right through their teeth and figuring out how to use you to get what they want. Also, like NYC, the skyrocketing cost of living in coastal CA has put a lot of people in their place. Perhaps the relatively low cost of living in Chicago hasn't put people in their place like NYC and LA.

I guess I’m not geared for cities in general, first of all. I grew up on the east side of Madison and after I graduated I peeled on out of there. It was some good, good riddance.

Now when I go back I throw up three fingers off the wheel and people look at me like I’ve got a third eye. Then I remember where I am. I can’t stand a place where nobody wants to know anybody.

Dear Mother,

I met someone I truly love. He said he is on the spectrum, whatever that is, and promised to send me a gift every day of Christmas. The first day was...unusual. He sent me a partridge in a pear tree. It's winter so there is no way to plant the pear tree soooo. I have no idea what to do with the partridge since I live in a no pet apartment but I love how whimsical he is. I'll let you know what tomorrow brings.

There needs to be a King Thames version of the bible.

Dear Mother,

Today my true love sent me two more birds and another partridge in a pear tree. I had no idea what the two new birds were so I googled it. Apparently they are turtle doves. I also have no idea what to do with them. Between the four birds there is an awful lot of feathers and poop in my apartment. He must really love birds. I love him, so guess I'll

just have to get used to birds in my life. Do you still have that cage we kept my parakeet in as a child? I could really use it about now.

Love you, talk to you tomorrow.

The Brewers play the Rockies the weekend of April 24th. Right now, nonstop round trip flights from Madison to Denver that weekend are going for $116. It’s on Frontier, so you have to add an additional $34 each way for checked ($38 each way for carry-on) luggage, but it’s still super cheap.

There are some really cheap flights for the first two weeks of March too for anyone who is interested in spring training, also Frontier. I just booked 29th-7th for $346 for two people round trip (before add-on stuff). Someone more flexible could get even cheaper.

Thanks for reminding me about that. I gave up a few months ago when prices were looking way too expensive.
