What's bugging you? [2019]

hawing
They say bubbler in the fox valley area, and since moving here in the early 90's, that has always bothered me too.

The weirdest one I have come across is Hot Tamales. To me, that is a Mexican dish. When I moved here, one of the first days of school (I am a teacher) hot tamales was on the lunch menu. I went through the line expecting a hot tamale/mexican dish). What I got was a sloppy joe. Not even a spicy version, but a regular old sloppy joe. (I actually called them BBQ sandwiches growing up, but I think they are universally known as sloppy joes) Asking around, I found out that they are known as hot tamales in the town and area I teach in, which to this day makes no sense at all.

I'm in the Fox Valley area and I don't think I've heard sloppy joes called hot tamales before, I also grew up calling them BBQs. I do say bubbler though. Strange since I also grew up calling soda "pop" but I think pop sounds kind of hick (no offense intended to anyone that says pop, it's not that big a deal) so I adapted to soda. But I won't budge off bubbler. I just can't reconcile a bubbler as a drinking fountain in my brain and I don't know why I'd want to start adding words and syllables to refer to something that's already been perfectly optimized as a bubbler lol.

Also I do feel like I've heard "sangwich" but can't specifically remember who or where or when. I have a fuzzy memory of it being said that way on purpose as if to poke fun at someone that did actually say it that way but I can't bring a specific memory to mind. So pretty vague at best.

I grew up calling it pop, it took me 10 years or more to start saying soda, and it still bothers me to say it....soda, just doesn't feel right.

Hot tamales might not be a thing n real cities, the town I teach in is small, and is surrounded by other small towns, all connected in many ways, so maybe hot tamales isn't really a fox valley thing, but a thing in all the little towns that are basically connected by relatives and the like.

I think he says "SAMwiches" instead of "sandwiches"

This gets me on a tangent!

For D E C A D E S my SO has used the word "sangwiches" where the rest of us would say "sandwiches." The only other person I've ever heard say it that way is his brother, so I'm guessing they learned it at home. They grew up in Kenosha with a German/Polish dad and Italian mom.

The only place I've ever seen the word sangwich was - of all places - on a food cart at Chase Field when we took an off-season tour there in 2007.

Have any of you ever heard "sangwich" in place of "sandwich"?

So, you saw the word "sangwich" written on a food cart? I just think of it as an exaggeration of local dialect. The only time I ever hear sandwich pronounced this way is if someone is purposely over embellishing a certain Midwestern way of talking. Like in "Da Bearz" skit from SNL. Your SO pronounces it that way in a non-joking fashion?

Also, there is no way that Gina Pella actually talks like that, right? That's gotta just be a shtick for the Pella Windows commercial. She sounds like a character straight out of "Fargo".

There’s a current commercial of hers running where she’s got it kicked down about 100 notches and sounds reasonably normal.

I don't like it when people fail to clearly pronounce the first "t" in "important".

My wife doesn't pronounce the "k" in breakfast, neither does her brother or their mother but their father does. It drives me crazy whenever I hear them say it. Our 3 year old has started to pronounce it that way too. Whenever I say breakfast to him I hit the "k" really hard so he knows the correct way to say it but he gets mad and says it back to me without the "k". They're obviously teaming against me.

Speaking of sloppy Joes, I always though Hermes line of "My Manwich" on Futurama was funny. I also wonder if anyone else wonders how sloppy Joe must have been to go down in culinary history for it. If we can answer that maybe we can tackle why Luke is always warm.
There needs to be a King Thames version of the bible.

According to legend, a cook named Joe at Floyd Angell's café in Sioux City, Iowa, added tomato sauce to his “loose meat" sandwiches and the “sloppy joe" sandwich was born. And the rest, as they say, is history!

Now onto luke!

Listening to Bill Michaels Show (I know, I know), and they have a new commercial for a "manscaping" product that they play every commercial break. It was funny the first time, but after hearing it roughly 15-20 times so far today, it has gotten grating. Do producers not realize that people will literally tune them out when they allow this sort of crap to happen?

The 30th Anniversary of The More You Know promos. I only recognize 2 or 3 people in them and they say the dumbest things. Apparently NBC feels these random 5 second spots have spurred social change.

YES! Everything now is way over done, at least compared to the 30 or 40 years ago. You use to just ask a girl to a school dance, now it has to be done in some grand fashion. HS graduation parties, for the most part, use to be low key, mostly family. Now everyone gets invited to everyone else's graduation party and there is expectation that the parents buy a gift (money) for each of their kid's friends when they get invited. Today's version of wedding and baby showers...uugh. The completely overboard expenditures of Weddings. I could go on.

Just my humble opinion, but I feel most of this has to do with social media. Everyone has to top everyone else and feels like they have to do what everyone else is doing. There use to be a few people that sent out that Christmas letter every year detailing everything that happened with their family over the past year. Now everyone does this 24/7/365. Look what we did on our vacation. Look at the fabulous food and drinks we had. Look at this celebrity/athlete we ran into at the store and took a picture with. Look at what my pets are doing. (Not to mention the "Even though you didn't ask, these are my political and religious views" people) To me it seems like a lot of people look at this and think...geez, if I'm not doing all that stuff and having all those experiences, then my life must suck. I must keep up with these people!

Ok, ok...sorry for being the drunk uncle. Now get off my lawn!

I think you're on to something re: social media. Most people post their highlight reels. You can't compare your life to a highlight reel.

I think I've watched all of those like 80 thousand times each.

They are NOT safe for work in many cases due to language.

You should watch all of them. Pork Chop Sandwiches may not even be top five.
