What's bugging you? [2019]

hawing
Just booked a place in Phoenix via Airbnb for this weekend's series with the Dbacks. We chose the location based on the "general area" blob that the Airbnb site shows the property to be within. It is within walking distance of the ballpark and other attractions that we are interested in.

So, I book the place.

The confirmation message shows a map of downtown Phoenix and the precise location of the property. Every thing is looking good.

Then I get the information from the actual property manager. This includes the ACTUAL address, including videos, etc. of the property and how to check in, yada, yada, yada.

Of course, the actual address isn't anywhere close to a walking distance. In fact, it's on the OTHER side of the interstate. Very frustrated that everything looks great when you book and then you find out that it's not even resembling the correct location. Ugh.

Not sure why you would want to stay in downtown Phoenix. Would be better to stay in Tempe and then take the light rail to downtown Phoenix. There is more to do in Tempe than downtown Phoenix which is mostly dead on the weekends at least on Sunday it is.

The light rail stops right at the stadium.

Believe it or not, there ARE things in downtown Phoenix that we are interested in besides the games. My wife is big on museums and such so we'll hit the Children's Museum and the Science Center, for sure. We've stayed in Tempe before--it's not our type of scene.

I would still stay in Tempe as the light rail takes you to both the stadium and the museums. IMHO there is more places to go to eat in Tempe than there is in downtown Phoenix especially if you have to use ride sharing or want to be within walking distance. Plus I absolutely hate downtown Phoenix as I work down there basically about three blocks from the stadium. Just don't stay at any of the hotels in downtown Phoenix those things are expensive. No idea why either as they are never full unless there is a convention.

Tres Leches Cafe and the AZ State Capitol--both great spots near downtown!!!

Also, what's bugging me is Amazon. My general indifference towards them has gradually trended toward hatred over the past several years. It's probably my hatred of consumerism being projected on them, but still. And no better day to hate them than on their made-up July holiday.

At my old work if it were particularly slow I would take long lunches. At my current place I have two separate people who drive by my house to see if I'm doing so (I don't). I'm getting a new work vehicle soon which has GPS and a little bird told me that I'm going to be monitored. If that turns out to be the case I'm not going to stay here.

A lady comes in the shop today and wants me to fill her balloons so she can ship them to a friend in CA. When he opens it she wants the balloons to fly out. I tell her that isn't possible because it won't survive the shipping. Helium balloons pop in planes due to the air pressure change. They also pop when they get hot so trucking it across half a nation in July isn't likely to work. There is no way a balloon is going to survive being shipped ground or air.

So she says you're the professional here how can I make this work. I tell her as the professional here I am saying it won't work. She then asked if I can just fill them up half way. I tell her they won't float that way. How about air filling them? Ummm no. (why do so many people not understand that?) How about using something else? Anything else that floats will have the same problem as helium and is also flammable.

She then gets mad at me and says that I can figure it out if I wanted to. Like knowing about balloons can somehow help me change physics. Anyway she had me fill them with helium and she's just gonna take her chances. I just don't get why some people just refuse to accept something isn't going to work like they imagined it would. What are the odds when it doesn't work she blames me for sabotaging them so I can say I told you so?

There needs to be a King Thames version of the bible.

You could have filled them with hydrogen.

What could possibly go wrong.

I really hate the websites that make slideshows out of an article. Example might be a mock draft. They force you to click to a new page to see each selection. It's just crap done to give the site lots of clicks. If I get a page like this, I generally just close the page and skip the article. But sometimes you want to read it - and it just annoys me.

Wouldn't the "professional" answer be to contact a balloon/party business in Cali and have them deliver?

That was my first suggestion. She really wanted it shipped to him so he could see it was from Wisconsin. Hell I even gave her the name of a reliable company that I know there. She had it stuck in her head and it wasn't coming out. On the bright side I have nothing but pleasant people come in since then.

BTW, I got a kick out of the quotes around professional. I never really thought of myself as being some sort of expert. I stated here in college and the owner (my now wife) said she'd give me a regular paycheck to tell jokes when I graduated. She was the balloon artist and I was the entertainer. It worked out well. Now I'm a "professional." I knew my degree in philosophy would pay off. :laughing

People always tell me how great it must be to work outside. I tell them that most of the time it is, but ask me again in July and you'll get a different answer. And the heat is only exacerbated when you're working 8-10 days in a row. And it's amazing how many people set out to hike 10 miles in this weather and don't bother to bring a drop of water with them.

I enjoy doing some volunteer work from time to time and one of the things I do is host a trail camera for the DNR (real cool project they are doing). I opted to put it on some public land and they obviously require it to be in a security housing box. Well I go to check it for the first time after about six weeks and to my unfortunate realization the security box is a great place for ants to build a home. Sucker is just loaded with itty bitty ants building their forever home. Trying to change out the batteries/card was real fun when I kept having ants trying to crawl up my arms. I guess you could say, something was bugging me.

Thinking I might bring some ant killer to spray the box/area next time. It is a cool program though for anyone interested. They will send you all the supplies (camera, rechargeable batteries, etc.) free of charge to participate.

I just field edited a 12-mile section of the Ice Age Trail on Friday (I'd planned it for 2 months, Friday was the hottest day of the year). I can never fathom when I hike how many people are unprepared - wearing flip flops, no sunblock, no water, no snacks.

I'm heading to Zion/Bryce in September, but sadly won't be able to backpack, everything booked up on me before I could had a chance to get my permits.

That is a cool idea, but WHOA SWARMING ANTS. I can handle a small number of ants but en masse it's gross.

Could you enclose the camera in a ziploc bag, or would that distort the image too much?

I did field work for a while and the standard operating procedure was to open outdoor boxes as quickly as possible and immediately turn/run away in case a swarm of wasps or yellow jackets came at you.

Ants are especially tricky to keep out because they are attracted to electrical currents for some reason.

The lens, laser, and infrared flash would all have to be uncovered so that would be pretty tough. The ants don't bug me a ton, but I more worried the bears are going to wack the heck out of it. They already investigate the camera as is...if the ants start laying egg/larvae in there they will really mess with it for a tasty snack.

Ironically I also have an ant problem at work. The main place I usually am is an older building with older windows to match. There are nice gaps in the window trim. These ants hide in the trim until the sun hits the window in the afternoon and then they, literally, come out of the woodworks. I mentioned it to the place, but hundreds of ants still come out every time I am there.

Not sure what I ever did to ants...but jeez.

My aunt's yarn shop was broken into and vandalized while we are on vacation. Of the few things I know things were thrown around, fire extinguisher sprayed around, did something to their fridge(for employees), and stole at least one old! no longer sold! sewing machine someone had dropped off for repair. Not sure if it was just kids doing it for a laugh or someone with a grudge, but somehow it amazes me how pretty and cruel some people can be.

If that was a grudge then the yarning community is more hardcore than I have been led to believe.

Hopefully, insurance can cover the damages.

9:1 corn syrup to borax has been my most effective way of combating ants. You can get the borax as that roach powder in any grocery. Too much borax to the sugar and the ants will know it's poison. I'll just put it in a cereal bowl and stir in some water every couple of days as it dries out.

Well...if they know it is poison will they just leave? I don't really need to kill them like they are in my house. I really just need them to not want to climb the tree to the camera.
