Why? You're selling low on Santana.

It probably is selling low, but without any options remaining they may have felt like they had to move him this off-season. Gamel gives the Brewers more flexibility both in terms of the 40-man roster shuffling between San Antonio and Milwaukee as well as adding another left-handed bat to the lineup mix when he is with the major league squad.

Not just “at Night” anymore.

As for the trade I'm fine with it. Santana or Broxton had to be traded basically. In return we get a pre-arbitration outfielder (Saving a couple million), with an option remaining, who bats left-handed. We don't really know which Santana we'll see in 2019 (I've been on the "trade Santana" bandwagon since midseason 2017, so pretty obvious what I'd expect) and so we don't know if it's an upgrade, downgrade or a wash offensively. Braun, Cain and Yelich play in the outfield when fit, so going from a RHB (On a RH-heavy club) defensively poor corner OF without options to a LHB with options who is a slightly better defender (FRAA and UZR say so, DRS pegs him in the same neighbourhood as Santana) likely makes the roster better even if the players themselves are a wash. With the roster flexibility, financial savings and a prospect coming our way too it's hard to find fault with this. Likely going to be mostly a wash, but it can make other moves better as well which could, if they happen, make it a better trtade.

A lateral move but probably a better fit. The upside seems to be on Santa's side but the extra low minors pitcher migates that somewhat. We need to keep the farm stocked as well as upgrade the major league roster. Getting someone who fits the major league roster better while adding something to the minors isn't a bad thing. With Braun being less than a full time starter these days it might have been nice to have Santana but this also gives Thames a place to play when Braun doesn't.
There needs to be a King Thames version of the bible.

High-80s fastball with movement, late round pick out of Harvard, multiple breaking pitches. Sounds like anyone we know?

Even looks like he might be related:

Hank Azaria's son imo.

Noah Zavolas: 18th round senior sign out of Harvard. No-no'd Yale in April. Velo ticked up senior year, was 88-91 with movement, above-average changeup, two below-avg breaking balls.

A right-handed version of The Raptor?

I like Gamel - played all three OF spots in majors, plus some 1B.

Real interesting is how he picked up his walk rate from 2017 to 2018. That is a sign he can make improvements.

Kid brother of Mat Gamel.

The real question of how this deal turns out falls on Zavolas. If, like Suter, he emerges as a solid MLB contributor, the Crew wins the trade.

Plus, this also means Thames or Aguilar will be on the move. Can't see the Crew keeping both with Gamel on the roster.

This deal stinks out loud.

What would you consider to be a more fragrant return for Domingo?

I'd rather keep Santana* than give him away for basically nothing.

The only people who will think this was good deal are Stearns worshippers.

Edit - *Santana not Santiago. Watched A Few Good Men too many times.

Claudino, Santiago, am I in a parallel universe of some kind where all names are just a little off?

Not meant as a rip on anyone, just find it funny. I am almost starting to wonder if it's a "hip" thing, and I am the last to get on board.

Basically Nothing 2018 272/358/370 (108 wRC+) 20.8 K%

Gamel is a legit major league asset even if he's not a star. Calling four years of him "basically nothing" is a little unrealistic

The downside to the trade is that Santana still has the upside to be an All Star player like he was in 2017, but the problem for us is that we are not a rebuilding team like Seattle and do not have the luxury of gambling on upside with a crowded OF.

This deal made the Brewers a worse team. I hope the OF has a healthy 2019 because the team just lost someone who could play a starting quality corner outfield if injury put him in the lineup every day.

The facts say otherwise. I don't love this trade but I don't hate it and I'm not sure why you would unless you're some sort of Santana fanboy.

but it's not like every guy suddenly forgot every piece of advice he gave
