Puig, Kemp, Wood to Reds - Bailey plus prospects to Dodgers

I thought the same thing, but that's a VERY left-handed roster. Pederson, Seager, Bellinger, Muncy for sure...probably Verdugo unless the Dodgers decide to just go crazy and trade him for Realmuto and have a crazy stacked team. I would think Pollock would fit exceptionally well on that team and would cost way less.

So the Reds are....going for it?

Trade is puig, kemp, wood and at least another player(s) plus cash for bailey, Gray and downs

Jeter Downs | Rank: 7 (Preseason: 8)

Team: Dayton Dragons (A) ETA: 2021

Position: SS/2B Age: 20 DOB: 07/27/1998

Bats: R Throws: R Height: 5' 11" Weight: 180 lb.

Drafted: 2017, CBA (32) - CIN

Scouting grades: Hit: 55 | Power: 45 | Run: 50 | Arm: 55 | Field: 55 | Overall: 50

The Reds certainly have not shied away from going after high school talent early in Drafts of late, with five of the six players taken with their top two selections in the last three Drafts coming from the prep ranks. After taking Hunter Greene No. 2 overall in 2017, they went up the middle with Jeter Downs, the Florida high school shortstop who really impressed during his pro debut in the Pioneer League.

While Downs isn't the biggest guy in the world, he's already shown the ability to barrel up the baseball consistently and drive the ball to all fields. He has the chance to be an above-average or plus hitter, especially as he continues to refine an approach that already led to him drawing a good amount of walks and limiting his strikeouts. He's more hit over power, but he should approach Major League average pop when he's fully matured. He's a solid-average runner, at best, but he's an excellent and aggressive baserunner who likes to run. While there was some question about his ability to stay at shortstop because of that lack of footspeed, the Reds were pleasantly surprised how good he looked at the premium position.

Skipping right to the Pioneer League for his pro debut puts Downs on a slightly quicker track for a high schooler. His work ethic, confidence and feel to hit should help him develop into a very interesting middle infield prospect.

Josiah Gray | Rank: 20 (Preseason: NR)

Team: Greeneville Reds (ROK) ETA: 2021

Position: RHP Age: 21 DOB: 12/21/1997

Bats: R Throws: R Height: 6' 1" Weight: 190 lb.

Drafted: 2018, CBB (72) - CIN

Scouting grades: Fastball: 60 | Slider: 50 | Changeup: 40 | Control: 45 | Overall: 45

The last time the Reds drafted a pitcher out of Division II Le Moyne College in upstate New York, he turned out to be a 12-year big league starter, all but one of them with Cincinnati: Tom Browning. That might be a lot for Gray to live up to, but the Reds are hopeful the athletic right-hander taken in the Competitive Balance Round B can follow in similar footsteps.

Coming out of high school, Gray was a slightly built shortstop with a strong arm, one who played the infield and pitched for his first two years at Le Moyne. After a strong showing in the Cape Cod League, he moved to the mound full-time and went from the bullpen to the rotation. As the spring wore on, he showed he could maintain his stuff deeper into starts, beginning with a 91-96 mph fastball. He flashes a plus slider with good shape, though he's still learning to command it. He hadn't used his changeup much and had limited feel for it in college.

Gray finds the strike zone with his fastball consistently, which gives him a chance to start, something he got to do during his pro debut. His future on the mound might depend on the development of his secondary stuff as he progresses through the Reds' system.

I don't understand this from the Red's perspective at all. All these guys are 1 year rentals for a team that isn't quite there yet.

The reds got a lot better this year without giving up a ton, just cash and really not a ton of it along with a couple fringey prospects. The Reds were also very left handed and got some balance in this trade and a solid/stable SP option. I can see what they were thinking to make this deal.

Seems like for this deal to make sense for the Reds it has to be a precursor to other go-for-it moves. They have been rumored as in on Realmuto and Keuchel (among others). No reason to stop now by only adding a few guys in the last year of their contracts. Go for it.

Nice trade from the Dodgers perspective, they moved a few expendable and costly parts and got back a couple of prospects that have a chance to turn into future major leaguers.

Not just “at Night” anymore.

I love seeing trades like this where some team pays another team to take their expensive crappy players for next to nothing in return.

How Matt Kemp has fallen from superstar to unwanted contract that gets tossed around every year. How many different teams are on the hook for him now, 4 or 5?

This seems pretty good for the Reds. You'd think Puig or Wood can get them something worthwhile in a trade this offseason or at the deadline.

A lot of people around here wanted the Brewers to draft Homer Bailey instead of Mark Rogers.

Yup, one of the first drafts where I distinctly remember who I wanted.

This is Jack Burton in the Pork Chop Express, and I'm talkin' to whoever's listenin' out there.

Winker is the only real OF the Reds currently have (Schebler & Duvall are pretty meh).

150 IP of good Zach Davies would have been the Reds second best starter last year.

No team has lost more games than Cincinnati over the last five seasons, looks like they're tying to do something about that.

How exactly does this make the Reds substantially better? Puig couldn't keep a starting job in LA and Alex Wood is 150 IP of Good Zach Davies.

Not sure I see the Alex Wood Zach Davies similarities. I would say this makes the Reds better.

They have also been in talks with players like Kluber and Realmuto, so they may not be done. I would consider Puig to be an upgrade for them, although maybe not a huge upgrade. I would be more worried about his clubhouse presence than anything though.

Overall, it makes the Reds better and I don't think they're done making improvements to the team. They have been linked to players like Kluber and Realmuto earlier in the off season. They may be no easy games in the NL Central this year.

Reading the Cubs board is pure gold right now... :laughing

Which board? Not seeing much yet.

Northsidebaseball. The Cubs really thought they were bringing in Harper.

I really hope he goes to the White Sox. Sliver of a chance but it would be so great.

They don't even have Duvall. He was busy stealing Gold gloves from Cain in Atlanta. The Reds were pretty thin in the outfield.
