White Sox acquire Yonder Alonso

Eye Black

Not a typical source for breaking trades, but a seemingly legitimate one nevertheless, the Stadium Network with the following Tweet...

BREAKING: Sources tell @WatchStadium that Cleveland Indians 1B Yonder Alonso has been traded to the Chicago White Sox.

On a side note, Yonder Alonso is the brother-in-law of Manny Machado.

Not just “at Night” anymore.

As pointed out by some White Sox fans on Twitter, their starting infielders are now... Yolmer, Yoán, Yonder (and Tim).

The Indians on the other hand have now traded away Yan, Yandy, and Yonder this off-season.

The Indians and White Sox hadn’t traded with one another since March of 1994... nearly 25 years. Also the same year the Hollywood version of the Indians traded Jack Parkman to the White Sox.

Not just “at Night” anymore.

Without knowing the return yet it appears the Indians will successfully be shedding additional payroll. Alonso is owed $8 million in 2019 and has a club option for 2020 of $9 million (with a $1 million buyout).

Probably also means that Abreu is as good as gone. Would love for the Brewers to go after him.

Abreu will probably be the DH.

Unless they sign one of Harper or Machado and add some more pitching, they're stupid to hold on to him.

Then why did they just trade for Alonso? I expect them to attempt to win this year.

If this means Bauers has to play 1B/DH more often, it just creates another OF opening for Cleveland.

Would be nice if they really liked one of Thames, Santana, or Broxton.

Perhaps the Tribe does like Domingo Santana but the issue is trade return.

Domingo has value in certain areas & limited impact/ value in other areas. I think we can agree his overall value is less now then it was after 2017 (not as productive in '18, entering his arbitration years so payroll cost is higher & now out of options moving forward).

It is also possible the Tribe has targeted another group of players & plan to spend a chunk of the money they have saved from the various trades in that direction.

I am convinced neither Tribe (nor Brewers) are done making moves. The rosters of today (12/15/18) will be different than those that open camp in Arizona or complete spring training to start the season..

According to Bob Nightengale of USA Today, the White Sox have no intention of trading Jose Abreu, even after acquiring Yonder Alonso from the Indians on Friday.

There had already been rumblings that Abreu may have been available, and Friday's acquisition of Alonso seemed to put even more wood on that fire, but perhaps the two can co-exist in Chicago. Alonso is an extremely skilled defender and likely to be the everyday first baseman, which would force Abreu into a full-time DH role, something that in the past he has claimed he does not want to do. This could just be posturing on the White Sox' part in order to get a better offer for Abreu.

Almost certainly the bolded part. They could trade Abreu for some prospects or also trade him for a couple major leaguers to fill holes if they think they can compete. I believe this is the last year he's signed for. It makes the most sense for them to trade him for something rather than just get the comp pick.

Hard not to like what the White Sox have done over the past year + They are also in on both Harper and Machado. If they land one of those, mixed with the talent they have brought into the organization, they good be pretty dangerous team for a good amount of years

Why can't he just play DH and/or be involved with the platoon at 1B?? I think that they're making a play for the big free agents and will at least "try" to compete.

They've acquired a bunch of 1-year commitments (or options/arby for the following year). I could see them trying to get Harper/Machado/Keuchel this year and if they strike out, see if they can win a division with only one other good team or beat out tankers for a Wild Card spot. If not, try for the big free agents again next year.

They're on year 8 or so of either having a crappy MLB product or tanking/rebuilding. They have essentially no long-term payroll commitments and a few good young players coming up or in the majors (though I think they are a bit underwhelmed by the depth of studs they have). I think they're going to try to get in the mix this year. If they are struggling at the deadline, they will have a lot of movable parts before they try again in 2020.
