Chase Anderson to Padres... [idea]

Padres get:

RHP Chase Anderson

RHP Jacob Barnes

Brewers get:

SS Owen Miller

OF Eduardo Olivares

CB-B pick 74

This is kind of a change of scenery deal for Anderson, who's gopher ball tendencies won't work well in Miller Park (plus, the young guns have passed him by). Barnes looks to get crowded out, and I think he is out of options.

Is miller a good SS? is he better than Arcia?

Olivares is a power-speed OF wh had double figures in doubles, triples, homers, and steals.

Miller is a decent SS (may move to second due to arm issues) who hit .335 between the Northwest and Midwest leagues. Not much power, but a spray-hitter from line to line.

Due in 2021.

Anderson and Barnes together are worth a lot more than a couple low level middling prospects. My goodness, lest we forget Anderson is a middle of the rotation starter under control through 2021 at very team friendly numbers and Barnes while inconsistent, has been a late inning reliever for several years.

If Anderson comes close to his 2017 form in the first few months of 2019, he could bring a package a lot better than this one. If they deal him now, Brewers need to assess his market value on more than what he did in 2018, and that wasn't awful by any means either. A 1.19 whip is nothing to sneeze at.

SD has a lot of moving parts that could help us today...Chase and his homers are a good fit for Petco, but the return should be more and more immediate.

AAllen to catch this year, Naylor to take over for or platoon with Aguilar next year, or any of their relievers that they have available (Strahm cough, cough) would be better headliners and allow those two A ball kids to be thrown in.

Strahm would be a really good pickup, especially with Burnes and perhaps even Woodruff moving to the rotation. But if you could get Gore or Baez - or even Quantrill... (and you can't, for that package, I know)
"Don't force him to choose between Chris Smalling and Phil Jones. It's like asking someone to choose between which STD to contract!"

Only makes sense if the front office needs to clear Anderson's salary to sign somebody better. Otherwise why are we selling low on a potentially useful SP.

I think if they move Anderson, it would be about 80% motivated by salary space.

More like 95% if it involved prospects. But you don't trade mid rotation starter with reasonable control for several years without getting a haul. His value dipped and could be revived substantially with a solid first half.

Yeah I don't want to sell low on Anderson simply for the sake of clearing salary and a rotation space. By no means is his salary cost-prohibitive. If you can get a fair return, I'm on board.

I'm not totally convinced yet that there's more fire than smoke in regard to trading Chase. His numbers and control look like a guy we would be looking to buy low on if he were playing elsewhere.
