Brewers acquire Alex Claudio

I agree with you whole heartedly. He allowed an astonishing 91 hits and doesn't strikeout anybody. Plus righties hit over .300 against him. The way CC uses the pen it will be hard to keep a guy who only faces one or two hitters at a time.

He doesn't give up many home runs or walks. It takes three singles to get a run.

There needs to be a King Thames version of the bible.

No one would have given up Lutz for Claudio and that’s essentially what we just did.

Small market teams can’t give away draft picks.

You think of it that way. I think of it as we just gave up Victor Roache or Evan Frederickson.

Or Kentrail Davis or Tony Gwynn, Jr., actual draft picks of the Brewers at #39 overall.

I mentioned earlier that the Rangers were 27th in MLB when it comes to shifting (https://baseballsavant.mlb.com/visuals/team-positioning). It would appear that the Brewers were targeting the Rangers as a trade partner and that might partly be because of shifting. (Mike Minor almost trade)

Does anything else think we might try to pick another pitcher up from one of the teams at the bottom part of this list?

Besides not comparing to a specific player (Lutz), the comparison should be to the norms for players picked in that area.

You could take it one step further - did we pay overslot for Lutz? If so, you really can't compare his value to the #39/#40 pick (I have seen both thrown out there). Specifically Lutz value should be supposedly higher pick then where he went.

Not a bad idea, but the targets would have to be heavy ground ball pitchers that the numbers indicate did not perform as well as they could due to lack of shifts. Also 3 of the bottom 6 are from the NL central, so the trade options are reduced.

Another thing to consider with draft pick evaluation is that the value of a #40 overall pick can fluctuate wildly from one year to another. IIRC, 2019's upcoming draft class is being looked at as lacking quality depth, with its "strength" being collegiate hitting. Any time I hear about a draft class' strong suit being a deep pool of collegiate hitters that don't really stand out much from one another aside from the guys who will definitely go in the top 10, I just assume there is a lack of high-end "can't miss" prep talent and overall lack of pitching talent outside the very top of the draft.

If Stearns and company feel like the 2019 draft looks like a dud in terms of quality depth between picks #10-75, and are confident they can find the same caliber player with their normal 2nd round pick (#66 overall) as with this #40 competitive balance pick, honestly that pick had very little value to the Brewers. Particularly if the upcoming draft class will be light on impact talents that will fall due to signability issues where having that extra bonus pool $ coming with the #40 pick would potentially make a difference in signing a guy who deserves to be picked much higher than 28th overall (Brewers' 2019 1st round pick).
