Rangers sign Lance Lynn - 3 years, $30 million

Eye Black

The Rangers have signed Lance Lynn for 3 years and $30 million.

There seems to now be a run on free agent starting pitchers (i.e. Lynn, Morton, likely Happ today, and obviously Corbin and Eovaldi previously).

Not just “at Night” anymore.

Much was made of Lynn not being able find a multi-year deal last offseason, but between the $12 million he made last year and this $30 million deal he has done just fine. Basically now guaranteed a total of at least $42 million since his time with the Cardinals ended.

If this is the market for free agent pitching, let's sit this one out.

James Shields logged 204 innings last year which was tied for 3rd in the AL and he was better than Lynn pitching in the same division for most of the year. I'll bet he could be had for one year at $10 million or 2 for $15.

This deal makes the Morton one look even better... :laughing

37 year old Charlie Morton versus 33 year old Lance Lynn sounds like a tossup to me.

I'm glad the Brewers didn't do this, don't get me wrong

James Shields would not be an improvement over what we have. I have no idea why you like him so much.

I have a lot more confidence in Morton (and I felt like his stuff would work well in Miller Park) than I do in Lynn right now, and three years for Lynn? Yikes.

Of course, take this opinion with a grain of salt - I liked Alex Cobb last off-season, and we saw how that turned out... :laughing

"Don't force him to choose between Chris Smalling and Phil Jones. It's like asking someone to choose between which STD to contract!"

Lynn had a horrible, horrible month of April and was much better after that. 4.13 ERA from the beginning of May forward. I've also seen some numbers which indicate he may have been a bit better than the 4.13 ERA indicates. For example, his ERA with the Yankees was 4.14, but his FIP was 2.17 and he had a K/BB ratio of 4.4 after the trade was made.

I think the Rangers would have been better served to keep this at 2 years to protect themselves a bit, but maybe Lynn's representation had their heels dug on a 2 year, 25 million deal and the Rangers then figured the third year would only cost them 5 million more. I don't think this is an unreasonable deal considering the Rangers are a team that can operate at 150+ million per season, only have 2 other contracts on the books for over 10 million per season, and don't figure to have big arbitration spending in the next 2 or 3 years.
