White Sox acquire Ivan Nova from Pirates

This tells me 2 things. The White Sox are likely to ramp up and try to contend quickly. This makes sense given Jimenez is about to break through to the majors. Also, the Pirates probably see their situation in the NL Central and may try selling off some additional pieces.

The "Chris Archer to Brewers" talk never really dies, it just fades into the background LOL

I haven't looked up the numbers to confirm this, but it feels like the Brewers struggled against Nova the last couple years (except Shaw). I'm not too upset to see the Bucs ship him out.

I don't necessarily think it means much about either team. Pirates still have a pretty good group or starting pitchers. White Sox add solid mid rotation arm that even rebuilding or emerging teams need.

LOL, I wasn't referring to Archer. I doubt we'd do a deal within the division anyways, moreso that they might sell off other pieces to other teams. If I was going to target anyone on the Pirates, it would be Adam Frazier.

I don't know why but I would see it as fun to have Harper, Machado, and maybe someone like Keuchel go to the south side. I have no reason for thinking that but the White Sox have literally a blank slate payroll other than a Tim Anderson contract after this year and basically had nothing this year until they started adding 1-year guys. It would make sense.

With how bad that division is, it completely makes sense for the White Sox to try ramping up. The Royals and Tigers won't be good anytime soon, adding Harper or MM to go with some of their young prospects and Abreu. They could contend in that division with 2 or 3 win-now moves.

Trading/acquiring Ivan Nova doesn't mean you are buying or selling.... he is just a guy.

That is somewhat true, but I have to assume the White Sox are buying.

The White Sox are on year 6 or so of a rebuild depending on if one thinks their struggles 3-4 years ago were intentional or not.

Their only contract on the books in 2020 is Tim Anderson and then a handful of arbitration players. I think they're trying to make a giant splash. Sure, they could see if Eloy + Kopech returning in 2020 is good enough to start spending but I don't think a $40 million payroll in 2020 while still trying out the young guys is a good gesture to the fans.

The #Whitesox get veteran starter Ivan Nova from #Pirates as @ByRobertMurray reported. Pittsburgh gets international money and a rookie league prospect

2-1 vs the Brewers this year, 1-2 last year. A couple of those losses can't be pinned on him. He's been effective, but not dominant. Just good at limiting damage, like giving up 7 hits in 4.2 innings, but only giving up 1 run.

Good opportunity for the Pirates to shed some potentially unnecessary payroll.

One random observation, as of right now Ivan Nova is set to make nearly $2 million MORE than the Brewers highest paid pitcher (and possibly much more if he qualifies for his starts and innings pitched incentives).

Not just “at Night” anymore.

Agree.

For the Pirates, it's shedding salary. For the White Sox, it's getting a guy to fill a rotation spot who can help them if they are actually competitive this year or that they can trade at the deadline for something.
