Current 25 Man Roster

SP: Chacin, Anderson, Davies, Peralta, Burnes

This is below league average. I fully expected a free agent pitcher to be signed or a trade to be made. A lot depends on Peralta throwing strikes and Burnes being able to pitch a full season. Davies and Anderson are huge question marks.

RP: Knebel, Woodruff, Jeffress, Hader, Williams, Guerra, Albers

Woodruff will be setting up Knebel. No lefty in the pen? One will be signed but overall, I like it. Sign Herrera and let Woodruff start MAY solidifies the rotation a bit but it is still sketchy.

C: Pina, Kratz

I can live with this. Maybe Nottingham will surprise and win a spot?

1B: Aguilar, Thames 2B: ? SS: Arcia 3B: Shaw UT: Perez

Who's at 2nd? Sign Davidson and keep Shaw at 2B? Talk about a potential line up! I'd love to see Profar in a Brewer jersey hitting 2nd. Thames needs to go. A Perez/Saladino platoon is not good.

OF: Braun, Cain, Yelich, Santana, Broxton

I can live with this. If Thames is gone Braun could get some time at 1B. Santana may have a break out year but could be Profar trade bait.

Minors: Barnes, Houser, Nottingham, Diplan, Stokes, Supak, Wilkerson, Taylor, Saladino

RHP

Cain

Yelich

Aguilar

Shaw

Braun

Pina

Perez/ Saladino

Arcia

Pitcher

I'm curious how Guerra rates highly enough to make your "current" 25-man. I'd agree with brewmann04 that Houser's in that spot over Guerra, at least until he loses it.

I also think they're more likely to keep 13 pitchers than 12, though I like the 5-man bench and thus also prefer only 12 pitchers.

Guerra was the team's best starter for a big chunk of the season last year, and was nails when moved to the pen. I think he wins a pen job pretty easily this year. I like Houser as well, and hope he makes it. Can't have enough hard throwers capable of going multiple innings.

Um, Hader is a lefty?

SORRY. My brain was on Deolis Guerra, the guy we signed yesterday & about whom I'd just posted in a different thread, not Junior Guerra.

We're starting to corner the market on Guerras -- not unlike how we did with Moutons back in 2000 but also not to the level the Giants did with Alous back in the '60s.

I agree, Junior Guerra over Houser. Aren't they both out of options? If it's an 8-man bullpen, then I add Houser to the OP's list.

This is just for fun since things will likely change, but this is where I'd see it if the season started today.

SP (5): Anderson, Burnes, Chacin, Davies, Woodruff

RP (7): Albers, Guerra, Hader, Houser, Jeffress, Knebel, Nelson

Line up (8): Pina, Aguilar, Perez, Shaw, Arcia, Braun, Cain, Yelich

Bench (5): Kratz, Saladino, Broxton, Santana, Thames

That's about $100mm in salaries for those 25 players (using mlbtr arb projections)

Guerra has an option, I would put Houser over Albers for sure.

I would too. Albers was a bad signing and they'll have to eat his remaining contract unless they can get some other team to take a flier, but they'd still have to eat most of it.

Albers is slated to make $2.5 million, which is pretty minor all things considered. I think at that price point, you at least bring him to Spring Training and see how he is. He looked like a bargain early in the year before the wheels came off.

Hader is a lefty but not a situational lefty (he pitchers to more than left handed hitters).

We just released a situational lefty that wasn't going to make a lot of money. I doubt we bother with one until near the end of the season.

My guess as of right now, based on players who are out of options:

Starting lineup:

Pina

Aguilar

Perez

Shaw

Arcia

Braun

Cain

Yelich

Bench:

Kratz

Saladino

Thames

Broxton

Santana

Pitching staff:

Nelson

Chacin

Anderson

Davies

Woodruff

J. Guerra

Albers

Houser

Barnes

Burnes

Hader

Knebel

Jeffress

Not counting signing bonuses or deferred salary, that brings the current payroll right around $93.2 million, not the $100+ million figure I've seen reported elsewhere. Plenty of room to add a free agent or two.

Freddy is in the minors to stay stretched out, and Burnes may be as well (probably replaced in the bullpen by Taylor Williams or, if he looks good in Spring Training, newly signed Deolis Guerra)

From what I remember, deferred salary is around 5 million. Also, do not forget performance incentives which likely will add. I think we are pretty close to $100 million right now.

Deferred salary does not factor into this year's payroll though, that's the whole point of deferring it. I'd have to look back again but the I think only players who have fairly certain performance bonuses (i.e. not incentives like winning MVP) are Anderson, Albers, and Jeffress, and even then we're talking probably less than a $1 million combined.

We're at least $6 million under $100 million, and that's assuming some iffy contracts (like Kratz) make it through the start of the season.

I am pretty sure I read somewhere that we owe 4-5 million in deferred contracts this season. I was able to find that we owe Matt Garza 2 million, Soria 1 million, Moose 1 million and Lyles $250k.

Jeffress can earn an extra 2.2 million in incentives this year. Chase Anderson could earn up to $400k in incentives. Eric Thames can make $500k in incentives. Lorenzo Cain can make a little over a million in incentives this year.

I'd like to see a list of deferred money from this season and deferred money being paid this season. When I said it was ~$100mm in payroll I wasn't counting buyouts, deferred comp, or the ~$555k Suter will make this year while on the DL.

EDIT:

As far as I can tell, here is the dead money and deferred comp. Now I don't know how the Brewers will handle these obligations when it comes to current spending, but it looks like they're right at $100mm.

Moustakas: $1mm buyout

Soria: $1mm buyout

Lyles: $250k buyout

Suter: ~$555k earned in 2019 while on DL

Garza: $500k deferred comp payment

Braun: ($3mm) in deferred comp

Cain: ($1mm) in deferred comp
