Three way deal proposed: NYY, SDP, and MIL fill needs.

This may not net the starting 5 pitchers that we'd all like to have come mid-December but it is a start as it eases payroll and brings back a superb, young LH RP arm along with Sonny Gray.

From MIL to SDP

MIL sends Chase Anderson, Eric Thames, Adam Houser, and Miguel Sanchez TO SDP

SDP send Eric Hosmer to NYY

SDP send Matt Strahm to MIL

NYY send Sonny Gray to MIL

minor lottery ticket A ballers/comp picks may be added to finalize the details.

TO MIL: My love for Strahm is warranted. Sonny Gray was sold to Stearns by DJ and is still a good idea in his mind even if the old pitching coach is in CIN. There is some salary relief as well, but Strahm and SGray are huge gets here.

TO NYY: Hosmer was much better in KC and would excel in NY with that park. He adds veteran LH hitting balance at the plate and veteran leadership in the field plus NYY can absorb his contract and get rid of their whipping boy in Gray.

TO SDP: The Padres get to rid themselves of that outrageous Hosmer contract, Thames is affordable and allows them to groom Naylor another year. Thames may be in need of a laid back new setting with more regular ABs. Strahm leaving may sting but they have 5 LH RP and get a starter, ChaseA was not in the Brewer postseason thoughts and gave up a lot of homers. Petco alone will help give him value. Houser has some talent if not options. Additionally, we throw in a 24 yr old RHP RP that had a 2.85 era/ 1.122 WHIP / 13.6 SOper9 at AA Biloxi last year, but a lil bit of a rough AzFL.

It makes no sense for the Yankees. They can just non-tender Gray if they want to be rid of him. They can afford a bad contract, but it doesn't mean they're looking to take one on.

It makes plenty of sense for us, and I can see it from the Padre's perspective as well, but I see no way that the Yankees are going to do what basically amounts to just doing the Padres a huge solid.

A case of each team riding them selfs of excess they dont want or plays that had down years except the Yanks all ready have a way of riding themselves of Gray at a far less cost. So I can’t see the Yanks doing this .

If you still don't agree then that is cool...just my thinking on this/my feeling of the way the NYY want to gain ground on BOS.

I am not going to defend my thinking to the bitter end, but in my opinion, I think that the NYY value other things more and I the way I see it from the NYY point of view is that they get to fill the Bird/Voit situation with a ring-wearing LH 1B that has success in the AL (buy low situation except for the salary) for the price of a player that they are looking to move anyway.

Could they trade for a 1B with a better CV than Hosmer...maybe not.

Dip into free agency? Here is the list:

Matt Adams (30)

Jim Adduci (34)

Justin Bour (31)

Matt Davidson (28)

Derek Dietrich (29)

Lucas Duda (32)

Wilmer Flores (27)

Marwin Gonzalez (30)

Brad Miller (29)

Logan Morrison (31)

Hanley Ramirez (35)

Mark Reynolds (35)

Danny Valencia (34)

If I'm the Yankees or Brewers, I just do Thames for Gray straight up. No way does anyone want Hosmer and the contract and Houser and Anderson seems like a lot of pitching to give up for a guy who has sucked for a year and a half and may never be what he once was.

That deal makes absolute perfect sense for both teams, which means it 100% won't happen, unfortunately. I'd love Gray, but I think he likely ends up going to the Reds for junk.

http://forum.brewerfan.net/viewtopic.php?f=66&t=37725&p=1173137#p1173137 I said that on Oct 13th but some people here implied that Yankee pressure would not be so good for Thames so I shifted him to the west coast.
