Rogers signing update

from JSONLINE.

The Brewers plan to begin negotiating with Rogers as soon as his high school season is complete. With Rogers pitching a two-hitter and striking out 16, Mount Ararat High School in Topsham, Maine, defeated Brewer, 4-1, Tuesday evening to win the eastern Maine title and clinch a berth in the state title game Saturday.

Each year, the commissioner's office makes recommendations for limits on signing bonuses for each slot in the first round. Last year, the recommendation for the fifth pick was $2.5 million and it probably is the same this time around.

Zduriencik said all indications from the Rogers family and his representatives were that the 18-year-old right-hander wants to sign as quickly as possible, perhaps as early as next week.

"We're feeling good about that because of conversations we had with the family prior to the draft," Zduriencik said. "And his agent indicated they would like to speed the process along. It's tremendous to hear that."

I would really be delighted if he didn't throw 96 pitches again. I'm sure he's thrown games like that before, and he appears to be healthy, but he's ours now, more or less, and -- all due respect -- I couldn't care less about the Maine HS championship.

Let's hope we sign him today or tomorrow and get him to the Rookie League. He's giving every indication that this will be a quick signing. Does this mean he's willing to take a little less than slot value and he just wants to play? Didn't he state that he's not in it for the money? I could care less what he gets, I like his attitude about wanting to sign right away and playing as a Brewer. Kudo's to him for wanting to win a state championship for his high school. It's too bad they lost, good effort though. Let's hope he's blazing 95 MPH fastballs by people in the next couple weeks!

Well, I know there are 16 players on that Mt. Ararat team that really wanted to win the game, including him. They had no chance without him.

And he threw 120 pitches earlier this year.

Thanks for the update. I may be in the minority, but I like the Rogers pick. I'm not as anti-HS pitcher as a lot of people here are.

That's a lot of pitches for a developing arm. I doubt anyone in Milwaukee will let him throw 120 pitches in a game until he's 22, and even then he won't be doing it a lot.

I'm glad I wasn't his dad/coach this year, because there is a very fine line between winning (which is important to each of those kids) and taking care of his son's future (which means being careful to not allow him to throw too many pitches).

Thanks for the update.

Yeah... the game was 11 innings and he pitched 9 shutout innings against Lawrence (who we beat much more handily than Mt. Ararat, by the way!) He struck out 22 and walked 4... so basically 75% of his walks this year came in 2 games. His dad gave him like a week and a half rest, though, to make sure his arm didn't fall off.
