Adrian Beltre retires

3166 hits, 5 gold gloves, 95.7 bWAR, 84.0 fWAR - should make it into the HoF without much issue. He had some up and down seasons, but it was a heck of a career.

After careful consideration and many sleepless nights, I have made the decision to retire from what I’ve been doing my whole life, which is playing baseball, the game I love.

I have thought about it a lot and although I appreciate all the opportunities and everything that baseball has given me, it’s time to call it a career. I have enjoyed the privilege of playing professional baseball since I was 15 years old. I have been blessed to have played 21 seasons at the highest level in Major League Baseball.

I want to thank God, my amazing wife Sandra for your unwavering and unconditional love, support and understanding throughout my entire baseball career, my three awesome children, Cassie, A.J and Camila for being the best baseball kids, my parents, and my entire family for all your love and support.

I also want to thank my agents, Scott Boras, Mike Fiore and the entire Boras Corp. for always believing in my talent. A huge THANK YOU goes to the numerous teammates, managers, coaches, and staff members from the Los Angeles Dodgers, Seattle Mariners, Boston Red Sox and especially the Texas Rangers. These past eight seasons playing in a Rangers’ uniform have been the best of my career and were made possible thanks to Rangers’ owners Ray Davis, Bob Simpson, and Neil Leibman, General Manager Jon Daniels, Nolan Ryan, and the late Don Welke.

I also owe a huge part of my success in Texas to the amazing Rangers’ fans. You guys are the best!

I also have to acknowledge and thank Tommy Lasorda for believing in this young kid from the Dominican Republic when others thought I was too young to be called up to the Big Leagues.

To all my fans in the Dominican Republic, the United States and Latin America, my sincerest THANK YOU for your continuous support throughout my career. While I will forever cherish the memories from my time playing the greatest game on earth, I am excited to become a fulltime husband and father, and I am ready to take on the next chapter of my life.

It’s been one hell of a ride!

Muchas gracias,

Adrian Beltre

Loved watching him play...definite HOF'er and by all accounts a great guy.

I will miss the epic head touching razzing by his teammates and even opponents, will need to search YouTube for a 'best of' compilation!

My Twitter feed is full of them today.

Moving the On Deck circle is probably my favorite.

If Beltre isn't a first ballot HOF, and over 80% at that, something is seriously wrong (like there isn't already) with the vote casting. I know it goes without saying for a lot of people, but this dude has seriously long been one of my absolute favorite non-Brewer players, and easily one of the top 4-5 3rd basemen ever.

Not to take away from Beltre, but I'm not sure he's in the top 5 3b ever. Mike Schmidt, Brooks Robinson, Wade Boggs, Eddie Mathews, George Brett, Chipper...all I think are a tier above Beltre. I can't think of any others offhand that jump out as better 3b than Beltre. For me, a first ballot guy has to be like Griffey or Mariano Rivera...extended stretches of being one of the very best in baseball. I'm not sure Beltre ever won an MVP, and he really wasn't THAT good a player until his move to hitter friendly Texas in his 30s. Before that he was a upper 700s OPS guy that played an elite 3b. His case for the hall relies on being very good, not great, and healthy for a long time...and really tallying up counting stats. It's still a good case, just not first ballot for me.

Great career, wish he could have ended his career with a competitive team. Watching him bare hand and fling the ball to first base without any effort will be missed. I think he had at least 2 more years of being a productive player, but it's nice to see a star leave with a bit left in the tank.

Always loved Beltre. The never wearing a cup story is great. The energy he played with always showed.

Just adding that another severely overlooked player on the 3B list is Scott Rolen. Pretty much the best defensive 3B his whole career with multiple GGs. 281/364/855. Beltre OPS was 819.

Also, adding Beltre in MKE this year wouldn't have been a horrible move assuming it would've been cheap. Could play 3rd vs all lefties and would be insurance if Jesus struggles (Shaw could get alot of starts at 1B) or if more 2B issues arise so Shaw plays there. I had him on my radar.
