BF.net Fan Community Top 25 Prospects Poll - 2018 Post-Season Edition - Voting closed

reillymcshane
Brewer Fanatic Contributor

Ladies and Gentlemen, we would like to invite everyone to take part in the 2018 Post-Season BF.net Fan Community Top 25 Prospects voting.

Voting is now open. Please take time and submit on this thread your top 25 Brewer prospects. Feel free to list any resources or news that you feel might help people with their voting.

Voting concludes on November 28. You can change your votes at anytime through that date.

RULES

1. Submit your Top 25 prospects, in order, by end of day on November 28. Put the player's full name to avoid any confusion (such as Jay Feliciano and Mario Feliciano). I appreciate it you would number them. Also, please list your players from #1 to #25.

2. You MUST submit 25 prospects. If there are only 10 or 15 or whatever, your list will not be included.

3. You are encouraged to go beyond pick #25 - adding a few more is great. That way if someone in your top 25 is traded or released, or if you mistakenly miss a number (not uncommon), or list a guy twice (again, not uncommon), or whatever, I can just bump up your next player(s) into the Top 25.

4. Rankings are determined by total points. The top prospect gets 25 points, second prospect gets 24 points, etc.

4. As noted above, if you submit your list and want to change something, just add the change to the thread. I'll accept changes up to the deadline.

5. Within a week or so after the deadline, we'll publish the new BF.net Community Top 25.

Eligibility guidelines:

Rookie eligibility is determined by the same standards as MLB:

“A player shall be considered a rookie unless, during a previous season or seasons, he has (a) exceeded 130 at-bats or 50 innings pitched in the Major Leagues; or (b) accumulated more than 45 days on the active roster of a Major League club or clubs during the period of 25-player limit (excluding time in the military service and time on the disabled list).”

- Ineligible players: Corbin Burnes (graduated)

- Eligible players with ML experience: Adrian Houser, Aaron Wilkerson, Nate Orf, Jacob Nottingham

Players no longer in organization

- SS Gilbert Lara - traded

- C/1B KJ Harrison - traded

- OF Demi Orimoloye - traded

- OF Clint Coulter - minor league free agency

- LHP Nick Ramirez - minor league free agency

- INF Dylan Moore - minor league free agency

- C Dustin Houle - minor league free agency

Player notes:

- LHP Quintin Torres-Costa #22 - Will miss most or all of 2019 with Tommy John surgery

Everyone, please have fun with our 2018 post-season prospect poll.

There is not a lot of sites that do a 'post-season' list - I only found one (Bleacher Report), so if anyone finds one, please add it.

Also, if there is any significant news that could affect people's votes - example: Quintin Torres-Costa's TJ surgery - please share it in the thread or PM me. I will add to the main post.

Also, if anything happens with minor league players - such as someone resigns who is currently a FA - please let me know.

Final thing, if there are any mistakes, please let me know and I will update. I may have missed a transaction or two.

Thanks. Have fun.

1. LHP Cameron Roegner (1 in mid-season poll) - Dominated, and looks to be a late-round find on the order of Brent Suter

2. LHP Aaron Ashby (NR) - 1 HR in 37 IP, and an 11.33 K/9 ratio in Wisconsin.

3. OF Troy Stokes (3) - proved 2017 was no fluke.

4. 2B Keston Hiura (4) - Imminent arrival in MLB makes for some interesting options.

5. OF Corey Ray (8) - Full season proved he is legit.

6. RHP Zach Brown (6) - Very solid numbers in Biloxi.

7. 3B Lucas Erceg (5) - Good news: Improved walk rate a bit. Bad News: .688 OPS.

8. RHP Trey Supak (11) - A clone of Brown.

9. OF Tyrone Taylor (9) - Earned a 40-man slot in AAA.

10. UT Weston Wilson (24) - An eventual replacement for Hernan Perez. Played all four IF positions and LF/RF.

11. IF Eddie Silva (NR) - Delivering a high-average bat at Wisconsin and Helena.

12. C David Fry (15) - Huge power bat. Not as close to the majors as Hummel, but this bat is special.

13. LHP Scott Sunitsch (30) - A 1.71 ERA in Wisconsin can't be ignored.

14. LHP Clayton Andrews (NR) - Has Hader 2.0 written all over him, but could he stretch into a starter?

15. C Cooper Hummel (17) - Showed some versatility in the OF. Good OBP skills, good bat. Best catcher in the system.

16. OF Tristan Lutz (16) - A .742 OPS is not bad, but he was so much better in 2017.

17. C/1B Jesus Chirinos (33) - Looks like a big bat and advanced OBP skills at 16.

18. OF/1B Ryan Aguilar (NR) - All of a sudden, he seems to be emerging as a Thames-ish bench option. OBP skills, some pop, and speed.

19. RHP Jon Olczak (NR) - Right-handed Hader.

20. UT Jake Hager (18) - Earned a NRI with 2018 performance.

21. SS Brice Turang (NR) - Intriguing OBP skills and speed. Can he develop power?

22. 2B Victor Vargas (NR) - A good hit tool, OBP skills (17 BB to 96 AB), and speed. May move Hiura elsewhere - on the diamond.

23. RHP Jorge Ortega (25) - Very low walk rate - came back from injury. Could rocket back to previous highs.

24. RHP Henry Medina (NR) - Eye-popping numbers in the DSL. Looks like a command/control artist.

25. OF Trent Grisham (14) - Still had 63 walks, but average not cutting it.

26. IF Dallas Carroll (10) - Good OBP skills are nice, but the average is not cutting it.

27. OF Joe Gray (NR) - Love the OBP and power, hate the sub-Uecker average.

28. C Jacob Nottingham (26) - His best service to the Crew could be helping land Realmuto.

29. RHP Conor Harber (NR) - Some good numbers, but BABIP leads to possibility of luck.

30. OF Micah Bello (23) - Decent OBP and speed, but not much average.

31. C Payton Henry (NR) - Good OBP, some pop. But is he eclipsed by other catchers?

32. RHP Nate Griep (34) - Could be a closer.

33. RHP Cody Ponce (31) - Just not up to past seasons.

34. LHP Cody Beckman (23) - Solid, but Andrews is eclipsing him.

35. C Alex Hall (NR) - Aussie pickup could be intriguing.

36. UT Jess Williams (NR) - Decent average, speed, and versatile. Australia's answer to Hernan Perez?

A number of new players. Leaving off QTC, Gatewood, and Dubon for injury concerns.

One thing about DSL players - they can be like playing roulette. Vargas and Chorinos, though, both look very impressive. Medina, while old for the DSL, is someone I think could do well.

Andrews, Ashby, Roegner, and Sunitch look like excellent lefties. Of these four, three were drafted in the 17th round or later.

EDIT: Adjusted list - adding Eddie Silva, dropping Dallas Carroll to 26 after LouisEly's suggestion. I'm still for trading Arcia and moving Braun to third. Anyone want to see if Shaw can play short. j/k - or am I...? ;)

24. Fernandez

25. Feliciano

EDIT: I meant to put my first list in the transactions forum, my second list into the Majors forum and my 3rd list into the Minors forum. This is all quite confusing.

(Note: I've always assumed that there are people on this site who actually have valid opinions about this sort of thing, and there are many, many more who are more like myself. I feel like us in the latter category should get more like 3/5ths of a vote or something.)

Just missed: Joe Gray, Cody Ponce, Larry Ernesto, QTC (injury related), Micah Bello, Phil Bickford, Nathan Kirby

We've traded away some and some others have graduated, but still have a quality list IMO.

1. Keston Hiura: Pretty obvious at this point

2. Zack Brown: I've pretty much been the president of his fan club on here for a while, but this ranking is partially because of the late season slumps of the next three.

3. Corey Ray: 3-5 are close, but Ray has highest upside

4. Brice Turing: Will the bat play in full season ball next year? If it does, should rocket up list.

5. Tristen Lutz: Bad bookends marred an otherwise very successful season

6. Jacob Nottingham: Still think he's being a bit underrated in some of the catching discussions

7. Mauricio Dubon: Looked to be breaking out. At least should provide a cheap utility option

8. Trey Supak: Performance not that far off Brown's this year, especially once he settled down at AA

9. Aaron Ashby: This may be premature, but I'm buying in. This system needs a lefty starting prospect with some upside

10. Lucas Erceg: Just when he seemed to be cranking it into high gear, August happened.

11. Payton Henry: Tailed off a bit in first year of full season ball, but seems as if he could have a future

12. Troy Stokes: Once again, if only the arm played elsewhere

13. Pablo Abreu: Now that Brown's basically a consensus top 10 guy, I need someone else to be ridiculously optimistic about. Abreu and No. 20 are the new ones.

14. Carlos Rodriguez: Lots of hits. Can he get more for extra bases, though?

15. Joe Gray: Upside, but debut underwhelming in some regards

16. Adrian Houser: Still think he can be an above average relief arm.

17. Marcos Diplan: Still's got the upside in relief, but I've given up on him as a starter

18. Mario Feliciano: The AFL spot was good, the subsequent injury not so much

19. Braden Webb: Felt like a breakthrough happened. Could rise fast.

20. Conor Harber: I'll probably be highest on him, but I think he could turn into a very good reliever

21. Jake Gatewood: The homers are good, the fact he's a first base prospect who has never cracked the .800 OPS threshold isn't.

22. Je'Von Ward: I think he or Abreu will break out in Wisconsin next year.

23. Micah Bello: Outfield depth means he'll probably try to build up the offense in CS next season.

24. Jolon Zhao: I'm buying the hype

25. Max Lazar: That Helena season was pretty good in context

26. Trent Grisham: This might be a bit low, but he has to start doing something above average other than walking

27. Caden Lemons: Hopefully next year is when he starts justifying the optimism about his upside

28. Bowden Francis: Can't justify this other than draft status and the late season promotion. Just have a feeling.

29. Weston Wilson: The hitting sure has picked up

30. Zach Clark: If how interesting a prospect is can be determined by the variety of reasonable outcomes, Clark is the most interesting prospect in the system. He could be a top five guy by this time next season or he could be out of baseball and neither would surprise me.

31. Cody Ponce: Still vaguely pessimistic

32. Tyrone Taylor: Mainly because the Brewers liked him enough for the 40 man

33. Quintin Torres-Costa: Missing a season will hurt

34. Miguel Sanchez: Close between he, Melendez and Olczak for the 34-36 spots. Love the K rate

35. Andres Melendez: Impressive debut season. Haven't heard much about the defense, but he hit well enough in DSL.

Whenever it’s time to make the lists, the first thing I do is look for Clancy’s list.

How many of the names did you end up looking up on Baseball-Reference or elsewhere?

Shocked that Eddie Silva isn't on your list.

After re-evaluating the numbers, I am shocked I left him off, too. I initially didn't feel good based on only 9 walks compared to 203 ABs, but he's got a hit tool, and he has some real pop - and most of that was at Wisconsin.

How does the Crew get both Silva and Hiura on the field at the same time?

1. Keston Hiura 2B - Hiura may need some more time in the minors to work on defense, but his bat could play tomorrow.

2. Brice Turang SS - Above average tools across the board. Will have ample opportunity to grow, with very few SS's to compete against.

3. Corey Ray OF - Turned a corner…kind of. Hitting .240 isn't going to cut it, especially with Cain signed through 2022. His bat will need to play up in a corner spot, if he's going to make it to the show in the next couple years.

4. Zach Brown SP - Credit to the Brewers scouting department. Another college arm who's knocking on the door quickly. Not as electric as Burnes or Woodruff, but has good command of all his pitches.

5. Braden Webb SP - Though Brown and Webb were both college righty's drafted in 2016, they are different pitchers. While Brown is consistent, yet not flashy, Webb has that 'wow' factor. Typically works mid-90's with the heater and has a huge 12 to 6 hook. The ceiling is higher for Webb than Brown, but the floor is lower, as well, due to command issues. Kind of has those Nolan Ryan mechanics, where he hunches over and rocks back off of the rubber, puts the ball over his head and fires. Favorite pitcher in the minors, just behind Hiura overall.

6. Maurcio Dubon SS - Dubon is probably a good comp for Turang. Solid tools across the board, yet not overwhelming in any one department. Will be an important piece on this team if Schoop/Arcia/Perez struggle out of the gates in 2019.

7. Jacob Nottingham C - I think it's his time. Still very young, Nottingham may start the year in San Antonio if the organization prefers a veteran 2nd catcher behind Pina. Not an indictment on Nottingham, but he probably could use another season's worth of experience to hone all of his skills.

8. Aaron Ashby SP - Huge fan of Ashby and very happy to see a lefty with plus stuff in the organization. I think he and Webb have probably the highest ceilings of the arms currently in the minors. Ashby doesn't yet have the velocity of Webb, but it likely will develop as he matures.

9. Tristen Lutz OF - Not a bad year for Lutz, but certainly not what we hoped to see, with all of the pre-season hype. Still very young, he should get a ton of AB's in Carolina.

10. Lucas Erceg 3B - Similar to Ray, Erceg will need to improve his hit tool before he can hope to break through.

11. Trey Supak SP - Supak is the good version of Cody Ponce. Big-bodied righty with solid stuff, able to eat multiple innings. He'll be on the 40-man this year, so he'll be in competition with Peralta if one of the five ML starters falters or is injured.

12. Adrian Houser RP - This placement may be too high, but Houser has the potential to be a very valuable bullpen piece. Starting probably isn't out of the conversation yet, but the Brewers likely have 5-6 guys ahead of him in the pecking order. The bonus with Houser in the bullpen would be the potential for multiple innings.

13. Marcos Diplan SP - Still young! I feel like that's been said of Diplan for 5+ years…He had more success in 2018 than 2017. So there's that. He'll likely still be on the 40-man to start the year, so it will be interesting to see if he stays as a starter or if the Brewers try to transition to the bullpen, as they've got a number of options ahead of him and behind.

14. Quintin Torres-Costa RP - Have to think that QTC would have been the 1st or 2nd option to get called up if a reliever were to go down, especially if it's Cedeno or Jennings. Stuff really plays up against lefties. Tough break on the TJ.

15. Jake Gatewood 1B - I don't think Gatewood makes the 40-man, so hopefully he doesn't get poached in the Rule 5 draft. Contact issues are still there, so he'll likely be in Biloxi for another season.

16. Carlos Rodriguez OF - Hopefully Rodriguez becomes the next DSL kid to make it work. Not much to show from that program thus far, aside from Arcia.

17. Joe Gray Jr OF - Tools, that's all I got.

18. Micah Bello OF - Bat speed looks legit.

19. Payton Henry C - Maybe too low of a placement, but we've seen a number of catchers perform well low in the minors only to flame out in the uppers. Cautiously optimistic.

20. Phil Bickford SP - It will be very telling to see how the Brewers feel about Bickford by the placement or lack thereof on the 40-man.

21. Larry Ernesto OF - Another DSL product?! More pop than Rodriguez, but hasn't shown the same hit tool yet.

22. Zach Clark OF - Toolsy player who could play himself into 4th outfielder, if things go right. Not exactly young, so he'll need a good Carolina season to start garnering prospect traction.

23. Devin Williams SP - Similar to Bickford, another Rule 5 eligible player with multiple lost seasons under his belt.

24. Caden Lemons SP - Showed some potential albiet in limited innings

25. Nathan Kirby SP - Similar to Bickford and Williams, Kirby is yet another Rule 5 eligible player.
