Derek Johnson leaving to go to Reds

Maybe Stearns saw what happened with guys like Anderson and Davies and didn’t value him as much as a lot of us here. I don’t know. Just spit ballin.

Anderson’s velocity went back to where it always was and he pitched more like the pitcher he always was and was maybe hurt and Davies definitely got hurt and other pitchers pitched beyond their peripherals under him this year. I doubt Anderson and Davies years factored In because what made them be bad was beyond DJ’s control mostly.

Losing him sucks. I hope being cheap on him isn’t a sign we are tapped out money wise on payroll too and won’t be adding much this offseason.

@Haudricourt

Stearns would not reveal what the #Brewers offered Derek Johnson to stay but you just get the feeling the Reds must have stepped up in a big way with their offer. That's usually how it goes.

Whatever number the Reds paid, it isn’t as much as we paid Albers and Yo.

This is disappointing news.

I am surprised it is Cincinnati of all teams, if it hadn’t been announced yet where he was going I think that would have been my last guess.

I have faith they will hire someone capable of doing a good job, but certainly disappointing when you think of the rapport he seemed to have built with the current staff.

Not just “at Night” anymore.

Who is out there that will do a better job than DJ?

Gonna have to mine for gold like they did for DJ.

That's just it. If we want to find the next DJ, it will probably be someone that no one has heard of. I doubt Stearns will be looking at the recycled pitching coaches that float from team to team on a yearly basis.

Well, I guess if our pitching stinks next season we can all peg Halloween of 2018.

So Johnson and likely Coles made power plays for raises and the Brewers balked. Thankful for the job he did in Milwaukee, but I hope he gets crushed in Cincinnati.

Coles is a joke but why wouldn’t Stearns give a raise to someone who earned a raise? That’s kind of the whole point of sports. Performance equals $$$

More to the point why did Stearns have a guy so good at his job on a contract that ended after a 97 win season? Pitching coaches make peanuts in the big picture. If they doubled or even tripled his salary (not likely) it would be money well spent.

I'm gonna throw this at the wall and see if it sticks, but is there any chance that DJ did not agree with CC on a regular basis as far as his bullpen and pitching management?

I know some will say that is wrong, impossible, etc., but as many questionable moves that were made all season long (yes, CC was far from perfect, and the realists know that) maybe it wasn't only the people in the IGT threads that didn't agree with CC, maybe DJ thought he did a lot of stupid things too.

Maybe he just couldn't stand the thought of another year sitting next to CC and watching him make moves that he absolutely disagreed with.

Just thoughts.

Feels like more of a vent for moves you didn't agree with, but maybe.

Take my statements for what they were, questions. Not everything is about vents and drama.

Those moves lead to 97 wins so I highly doubt that is the case. No one could possibly say the team underperformed under CCs leadership.

It’s not like he is going to a team with a better manager.

Well, without knowing the specifics, I'm sure they offered him a raise, but it was a percentage increase on what he was currently under salary for. I don't know how pitching coach contracts work, but I doubt they are like players, where they are free to leave whenever they feel.

Every manager does stupid things. CC made fewer of them than most managers this year.

The front office clearly feels that they themselves were/are much more of an influence on how well the Brewers pitched as a staff than DJ was.

I sure hope they are right.

Of course the front office was more of an influence. They were the ones who acquired/drafted the players. Coaches can be good, bad, or in between, but the players are the ones who determine whether or not the team loses.

A ton of pitchers we’ve brought in under DJ have had years they’ve never had or out pitched their peripherals. I think DJ has had a huge role in the success of this, not all of it but the majority. Sure the actual pitchers still had to perform and the FO had a role in identifying them and with the shifting but DJ molded these guys and got them on the right tracks. This is a huge loss.
